Is the Barry Bonds story shedding light on our inhumanity?
I’ve kept my Blog free of any mention of Barry Bonds, oh not because I have any dislike for him, quite the opposite is true. I think what’s occurred is quite a shame. Sure enough, when compared to the great tragedies of our day, one might place this quite low. Well perhaps, but what I wish to do here is highlight an even more insidious sadness in the heart of the American sports enthusiast and the corporate headquarters of MLB. You will argue it naive and foolish to compare the attitude of the casual sports fan couch potato Joe or media Martin, who pretends to be an authority on all sports, with the violence of street crime or aggression between nations. The national pastime, I aim to show, has revealed a deep wanton for stars to fall. Not just any star but ones who most contrast a missing in the average guy. Dare to look some more? If someone told you your dad or son was accused of a hideous crime, your normal divine self assumes a mistake has clearly been made. You don’t even experience a wanting for it to be untrue, you haven’t even considered the improbability of it to use the word “want”. All your friends of course are wanting and hoping the accusations are in error. Oh yes there are always a few who wish for the abnormal pleasure of seeing another’s demise. Now we know much about that behavior. I am bias, and therefore perhaps not the best to tell you of the many qualities you’d admire about Barry Bonds, and I could skip this part of the analysis as that has been thoroughly covered by the press and media in general. Right? Why not, then. The stats, the amazing poise at the plate, that can not be denied, that, I rarely read a dispute. What we do however find ourselves subjected to are all the over used talking points, bad Barry, too much baggage, cheater. Think of it, 160 million people in this country alone are estimated to follow baseball at least casually. How is it so many of them have a wanting for Barry Bonds to be “guilty” of all these hideous crimes. Wanting someone to fall because he did all the things you couldn’t.. Not the stats of course, but the standing up to those who feel they own you. That is what Barry did. What a horrible thing. For all those who don’t know that should find out. And then recall that that is precisely why you should want Barry to be innocent of not being straight with the grand jury . I think he was. He’s too good and didn’t need to do anything to be as great as he is. Barry contributed extraordinarily to the fond memories of millions of fans and the San Francisco ownership arrogantly decided to rip that away from the fans by trying to remove his persona from the stadium. That has only made his presence more real. So when the media aims to influence their readership in a negative way, I don’t cheer on the media. Barry has done more good than you could know. Ultimately I only have my own gut feelings and rational to want all that mean spiritedness to fade. Do you think its possible that Barry’s millions of fans know him better than those who only repeat, repeat and repeat the out of context, perhaps justifiable angry moments of a star. I don’t expect to change anyone’s mind about Barry, those who feel it necessary to want and hope a star is brought down rightly or wrongly does not matter, there is a need to play God. You have Google, read the articles from years ago and find out about the real Barry Lamar Bonds. The baggage belongs to the owners and MLB itself.. The aura of mean spiritedness surrounding MLB is real and it will be difficult to imagine it not eating away at the heart and soul of the greatest game ever conceived. Have we been infected? By whom? Think about it. But when you are finished, let it go, just think about all the great and lovable things Barry Lamar Bonds has done. How many exciting moments were there. All those they are determined not to mention. Decades down the road this era will not have a kind feeling towards those who egged on baseball fans to see only the distorted view of an time when owners looked the other way rather than support the marvel that the players and the this game is. As for me, I don’t want to spend one more moment pointing at our weak side. And oh yes, let Barry play.
