Kentucky Basketball: 5 Burning Questions for Remainder of Wildcats' Season
It's hard to come up with burning questions for the Kentucky basketball team when it's sitting undefeated (19-0, 6-0 SEC) and steamrolling opponents.
However, there are some issues that still need to be addressed.
Whether it's the growth or decline of a player, if the team can keep it up or the rotation, there are things that need to be sorted out. The Wildcats are in the midst of a semi-break since winning at South Carolina on Saturday, as they play at Missouri on Thursday night.
With that in mind, here is a look at five burning questions for the Wildcats for the remainder of the season.
Will Devin Booker Be a 1-and-Done?
1 of 5
Heading into the season, Kentucky fans across the nation were boasting about the returning players and Karl-Anthony Towns. Then there was talk about Trey Lyles and fan favorite Tyler Ulis.
Not mentioned right away was a deft shooter from Mississippi who didn't look great in the tour in the Bahamas. However, things have changed drastically over the last six months.
Once thought of as a four-year player, the thought of Devin Booker leaving for the NBA after his freshman year is a real possibility. DraftExpress' latest mock draft projects him as the No. 14 overall pick, and the guard is looking like Kentucky's best player.
He's currently shooting 50 percent from behind the arc and is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.8 points per game. Booker is also arguably the best perimeter defender for Kentucky, with the ability to guard three different positions while providing good size at 6'6".
Kentucky fans, enjoy Booker while you can because it's looking more and more like he'll only be around for this year.
Will the Old Dakari Johnson Return?
2 of 5
Dakari Johnson started the season looking like Kentucky's best player and a dominating force in the post. He scored in double digits in six of the first eight games and grabbed 25 rebounds in Kentucky's first two games.
Since then, Johnson has fallen back to earth, scoring over 10 points just twice. He looks like he's playing timidly and is afraid to make a mistake in the post, as opposed to the confident way in which he started the season.
In the first eight games, the center was quick with his moves, whether it was going to the rim or kicking it back out for an open shot.
He's now starting to bring the ball down, allowing guards to dig at it, and attacking the rim less frequently.
Will Dominique Hawkins Be in the Starting 5?
3 of 5
When Alex Poythress went down with a torn ACL, questions started popping up about who would take his role and if the platoon system would stay.
After a handful of games in which four subs were swapped for five, Kentucky head coach John Calipari made a switch. He inserted Dominique Hawkins into the starting lineup against Missouri and moved Trey Lyles back to his original platoon.
The outcome was a 49-point win, with everyone looking more confident and comfortable playing with people they are used to.
Hawkins provided a defensive spark in the first platoon, while showing an improved offensive game from his freshman year.
However, the guard suffered an undisclosed injury and didn't play against Alabama or South Carolina. Will Calipari put him back in the starting five?
If he's healthy, he deserves to be there and it makes sense to keep the platoon system going due to the success the team has had this season.
Will Karl-Anthony Towns Meet Calipari's Standards?
4 of 5
Karl-Anthony Towns has had lofty expectations since he decided to come to Kentucky to play basketball. However, those expectations got even higher when John Calipari said he wants Towns to be the best post player in the country by the end of the season.
Towns, who has plenty of post moves and looks polished on the offensive side, still has improvements to make.
Too often, the forward looks soft in the post and tries to do too much instead of using his 6'11", 250-pound body to move people out of the way.
There's no doubt Towns has the capability to be the best post player in the country. DraftExpress projects him as the third overall pick, but he does need to be more consistent over the rest of the season.
Will Kentucky Lose?
5 of 5
Ah, here's the question that can't be avoided. Will Kentucky finish the season undefeated?
There's a real possibility the Wildcats go through the SEC undefeated, especially since Florida did last season. With Florida having a down season and Kentucky getting Arkansas in Rupp Arena, the only true threat to the team finishing the regular season undefeated is a trip to Georgia to take on an upstart Bulldog team.
However, with the way Kentucky plays defense, the Wildcats will always be in a close game no matter how many shots they miss. That's why Kentucky won't lose this regular season.
