Prigioni Traded to Rockets

Thursday, Feb. 19

Pablo Prigioni was traded to the Houston Rockets for Alexey Shved and for 2017 and 2019 second-round picks, the Rockets announced.

Prigioni Potential Trade Target

Sunday, Jan. 25

Multiple teams are reportedly inquiring about a potential trade for New York Knicks point guard Pablo Prigioni.

ESPN insider Marc Stein mentioned the Detroit Pistons specifically on Sunday as a prospective Prigioni suitor:

Detroit suffered a big blow in Saturday's loss to Milwaukee when Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings went down with a season-ending torn left Achilles, per The Detroit News' Vincent Goodwill:

Prigioni doesn't have a significant role on a woeful Knicks squad, but he does have solid per 36-minute averages of 9.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.1 steals this season (h/t Basketball-Reference.com).

At this point in his career, the 37-year-old Prigioni would probably like to be in a better situation to win.

Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv previously reported what he heard about New York's desired compensation for Prigioni:

Salt City Hoops' David J. Smith feels Prigioni is best suited to join a team that's in the playoff hunt:

Although the Pistons sport just a 17-27 record, their play has picked up in a big way since they cut Josh Smith loose. Jennings was a big reason for that, though. Adding Prigioni to the mix may help on defense, but Jennings is the leading scorer and focal point of the offense.

Any younger assets Detroit can hold onto will benefit its ability to build sustainable success. Bringing in a veteran like Prigioni may not be worth even the modest price he'll cost.

By next season, Spencer Dinwiddie, who tore his ACL last January, should be ready to make a bigger impact. That mitigates the Pistons' need for point guard depth, since D.J. Augustin is under contract for another season as well.

The Knicks need all the help they can get, and dealing Prigioni is a sound strategy for their long-term vision. However, Detroit ought to take itself out of the running based on where its squad is at the moment.
