Manchester City in Pole Position to Sign Sterling
Friday, May 22
"City are ready to test Liverpool's resolve to keep Sterling with a firm bid [...] and they feel they can offer the player the stage to be challenging for trophies and playing in the Champions League on a regular basis," reported ESPN.com.
"ESPN FC has been told that City's hierarchy are huge admirers of Sterling's talents and feel his arrival would put down a major marker for their ambitions next season."
Sterling Reportedly Wants Liverpool Exit
Monday, May 18
Ben Smith of BBC Sport reported that Sterling "is expected to tell Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers that he wants to leave Anfield this summer."
According to Smith, it'll be the second time Sterling has told the Reds of his wish to leave:
According to Sky Sports, "Sterling feels 'bullied' into signing new contract and feels the club have failed to protect him from negative headlines." The outlet also added that Sterling "feels let down by leaks of previous contract offers."
On May 1, Rodgers continued to take a hard stance against Sterling's departure, as noted by Andy Hunter of the Guardian:
"Clarifying Liverpool’s position for the summer on Sterling, Rodgers said: “We’ve made our position clear from the beginning and the owners are very much supportive of that. Raheem won’t be going anywhere this summer, even if there’s not a deal agreed.”
"
Sterling was handed the responsibility of being the team’s talisman at Anfield this year. Despite his tender years and despite the pressure that's been heaped upon him, he's flourished and remains a massive creative influence for his team.
Of all the prodigious young players that Rodgers has, Sterling is the undoubted crown jewel, and having sold Luis Suarez to Barcelona last summer, Liverpool will be hoping to keep their star player at Anfield.
