Oscar De La Hoya, Pepe Gomez to Launch TV Channel: Latest Details and Reaction
Retired star boxer and president of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya is launching a new television channel, dubbed De La Hoya TV, partnering with Cancun Boxing promoter Pepe Gomez to do so.
Joe Flint of the Wall Street Journal reported the news on Tuesday (h/t Edward Chaykovsky of BoxingScene.com). The report also indicates that the channel will be a video-on-demand service free of charge until the spring, when a subscription fee will be attached.
De La Hoya announced the impending launch of his media venture at the NATPE TV programming convention in Miami Beach, adding that he'd serve as chairman.
De La Hoya TV already has a Twitter account, has supplied several details and is asking for outside input for the channel's content:
The primary objective of the Spanish-speaking lifestyle and sports channel is to provide viewers with an inside glimpse into the diverse array of personalities that occupy the boxing landscape.
"Boxing has so many characters and celebrities...Why not give the fans the opportunity to experience through De La Hoya TV how their heroes live?" said De La Hoya.
Exposing fans to more of the behind-the-scenes happenings in the industry can only help boxing, which is short on actual fights with significant star power as it is. The nature of the sport doesn't allow for more than a few bouts for its biggest names in a calendar year.
By showcasing not only the work that goes in leading up to those rare spectacles, but also allowing more transparent access to follow other boxers who aren't quite household names, De La Hoya has the makings of a successful enterprise.
