Greg Roman to Bills: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappJan 12, 2015

Greg Roman was one of the most sought-after coordinators in the NFL this offseason. Now, the offensive coordinator has a new home, as he'll be joining the Buffalo Bills. The team confirmed the news:

Chris B. Brown of Smart Football weighed in with his thoughts on the fit for both sides:

Roman made his mark with the San Francisco 49ers over the past four years, installing the Pistol offense that quarterback Colin Kaepernick ran so effectively in San Francisco's 2012 run to the Super Bowl and its 2013 run to the NFC Championship Game, when the 49ers lost to their bitter rivals, the Seattle Seahawks.

Roman came to the 49ers with former head coach Jim Harbaugh from Stanford, where he spent two seasons. He previously spent 13 seasons in the NFL as an assistant with the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens.

He'll bring a run-heavy, ball-control philosophy to Buffalo and has been at his best in the past working with athletic quarterbacks who can run the read-option. The 49ers did utilize a wider variety of spread formations and attempted to throw the ball more this season, though the team finished 20th in yards per game and 25th in points per contest, suggesting to many that the shift in philosophy backfired.

However, that may not be entirely accurate. According to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, "One team source said he analyzed all the plays that the 49ers ran from the opponent’s 35-yard line and in and estimated the team wasted more than 100 points. The biggest culprit: Drops and missing open receivers."

It's hard to blame Roman for that.

Plus, the 49ers fell apart on a number of fronts this season. Roman will now have the chance to start fresh with Buffalo and reestablish himself as one of the more respected offensive minds in the game.

That fresh start should benefit both Roman and the Bills, who are in need of a spark offensively heading into 2015.
