Amir Khan Told He Won't Get Floyd Mayweather Fight as Eddie Hearn Taunts Brit

Nick AkermanDec 11, 2014

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn believes Amir Khan will never receive his dream fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hearn suggests this is because "it is a tough fight for Mayweather stylistically," as reported by David Anderson of the Daily Mirror.

Despite providing a veiled boost to Khan's confidence, Hearn also taunted the British pugilist by suggesting his desperation to fight Mayweather is the only reason he won't step into the ring with Kell Brook.

The Matchroom promoter claims he offered Khan $5 million to face Brook, which he says is much more than he would make against Mayweather, per Anderson. He adds the Bolton-born fighter's "ego" is "getting in the way" of what he considers to be a "natural Wembley fight."

Despite the success of Carl Froch's second victory over George Groves—which saw approximately 80,000 fans descend upon the English stadium—Sky Sports' Jamie Casey believes a Khan vs. Brook fight would be best suited elsewhere:

Financial quibbles aside, Hearn also turned to more obvious tactics when taunting Khan by publicly stating the Olympic silver medalist would lose to Brook.

"He's hanging around, hoping for a Mayweather fight and the main reason is because if he loses to Floyd Mayweather, he can come again," said Hearn, per Anderson. "But if he loses to Kell Brook, he'll be in all sorts of problems. It would be horrific for him."

It's interesting to consider Mayweather as a safety net for Khan. Expectations would certainly be low against the unbeaten Pretty Boy, who would enter the bout with everything to lose. Khan's speed has the potential to trouble the American, but the Brit has often struggled to utilise such an asset in tougher bouts.

Mayweather is more than capable of neutralising Khan's pace advantage just by keeping his opponent on the back foot, a position the 28-year-old has struggled to recover from in the past. Even so, a valiant loss from Khan would enhance his profile in the States. A defeat to Brook would most likely put Special K in with a greater shot of facing Mayweather, particularly if Khan loses to Devon Alexander on Saturday.

Hearn is certainly right in suggesting such an eventuality could significantly impact Khan's career. Brook possesses genuine knockout power and has ended 22 of his 33 fights by sending his rival packing, per BoxRec. Khan proved to have a glass jaw against Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia, too, meaning he would be in real trouble of suffering a third knockout defeat if he agreed to face his English counterpart.

Let's not forget Brook previously called Khan out on Twitter:

Facing Brook is certainly the gutsier option. Mayweather's profile is so impressive that facing him can only be considered a bonus fight for Khan. Hearn knows this and is now twisting the screw to make Khan reconsider his future. It's never profitable for a fighter to allegedly be running scared, so Khan has a massive decision ahead of him.

He can wait and wait for Mayweather, but with suggestions Money could finally face Manny Pacquiao, Khan may have to enter the danger zone against Brook to prove his stature once and for all.
