Dan Hawkins' Media Day Quotes: Colorado Buffs Down to 74 For Fall Camp

Stuart WhitehairAnalyst IAugust 2, 2009

Greetings, Buff fans, from CU at the Game!

Turn your calendars it’s August!

The month of dog days, vacations, and, for football fans, fall camp While we are sitting in our air-conditioned homes and offices reading up on the Buffs, the players and coaches will be toiling away out in the August heat, getting ready for the season opener against the Colorado State Rams.

While fall camp does not open until Friday, there is still plenty of news to share. This past week, the Big 12 held its annual Media Days. Convening all of the head coaches from the conference, along with selected players from each school, over 300 reporters and broadcasters descended on the location for this year’s title game in Arlington, Texas, also the site of the new Dallas Cowboys’ stadium, in search of quotable quotes.

Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins, as you might expect, had plenty to say. His “10 wins. No excuses”, statement at last December’s team banquet was a hot topic, but Hawkins also weighed in on his return as a position coach, the CU quarterback race, and the proposed permanent move of the Big 12 title game to Dallas. Some of Hawkins’ quotes from this week are up now at here.

Also posted this week …“What’s in a Number?”

Colorado will open fall practice this Friday with only seventy four, out of a possible eighty five, active scholarship players. Last November, with injuries, the Buffs were down to forty seven available scholarship athletes for the Nebraska game. Are the Buffs heading that way again?

Is seventy three way too low a number for a Division 1-A team to be fielding in August, if it hopes to be a contender for a title in November?

There is also a side note about one of the players who will not be returning this fall. Freshman tight end Ryan Wallace, from Bowling Green, Kentucky, left CU after spring practice, citing homesickness. His father (and high school coach) sent me an email this week. What Kevin Wallace had to say about his son, and about the CU football program, will make you proud to be a Buff fan.

Finally, now that it’s August, I have to tell you

I have been working with a professional web designer this summer, and CU at the Game will be receiving a major facelift, just in time for the CSU game!

The new front page is stunning, the articles will not have the glitches of the past (the WordPress I’m using now has an annoying bug which will create—and—delete paragraph spacing at will).

There will be greater opportunities for interaction from you, including weekly polls and an enhanced comment section, as well as much more accessible archives (including a search engine, so you can seek out your favorite players, games, opponents, etc.). Thank you for putting up with the website’s growing pains over the first two seasons—your loyalty is about to be rewarded!

Breaking news - On August 2nd, the Buffs picked up another wide receiver recruit for the Class of 2009. Will Jefferson, out of Moreno Valley, California, wasn't highly recruited as he was seen as academic risk. However, the transcript issues have been resolved, and Jefferson is on his way to Boulder for the start of fall camp August 7th.

More on Jefferson, including statistics from his senior year in high school, are posted on the website.
