Chicago Cubs-San Diego Padres: Cubs Win in a 12-3 Rout

The Chicago Cubs easily beat the San Diego Padres by the score of 12-3 behind a six-run fifth and five-run sixth.

Derrek Lee, who went 2-for-4, got things started in the first with a double that scored Ryan Theriot—giving the Cubs an early 1-0 lead.

Later, the Padres tied the game on a single by Tadahito Iguchi in the third and even took the lead in the fifth on a home run by Jody Gerut.

However, in the bottom of that same inning the Cubs scored six runs. The first two came off the bat of Alfonso Soriano who hit a 2-run home run, Aramis Ramirez then singled in Ryan Theriot to make the score 4-0. The final two runs came off singles by both Geovany Soto and Mark Derosa.

In bottom half of the next inning, the Cubs put up five runs. The first run came on a bases loaded walk to Fukudome. Another single by Derosa plated three due to a huge throwing error by Kevin Kouzmanoff. Reed Johnson then singled in Derosa to put the Cubs up 12-2 after six.

Alfonso Soriano, Ryan Theriot, Mark Derosa, Derrek Lee, and Carlos Zambrano all had two hits on the night. Plus, Soriano, Derosa, and Soto had two RBI each.

Carlos Zambrano gave the Cubs seven innings as he allowed three earned runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking two. Zambrano won his fifth straight decision as he bettered his record to 6-1 on the season.

Padres Randy Wolf struggled, going only four innings as he gave up seven earned runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking five. With the loss, Wolf fell to 2-3 on the season.

he Padres did score a late run when Enrique Gonzalez singled in Scott Hairston in the seventh inning to make the final score 12-3.

Tonight the Cubs will send Jason Marquis, who is 1-2 with a 5.08 era, to the mound up against Shawn Estes, who is making his first start of the season as he only pitched in a relief spot back on May 8th.
