Well, that was awful.
In what was probably the Yankees' worst performance of the year, the offense managed just one run and six hits off of Matt Garza and friends, while starter Andy Pettitte couldn't even last until the fifth inning.
New York is fortunate to remain only four games back of Boston, who lost again, but the Yankees now trail second place Tampa Bay by 3.5 games after falling 7-1 to the Rays Monday night.
The Bombers got more bad news before the game when it was revealed that A-Rod's rehab is going a little slower than expected, and he should be out for another week. The good news is that Chien-Ming Wang is scheduled to pitch Tuesday.
And now the grades for Monday's loss.
Joe Girardi, Manager: (D) The Yankees are hitting into a ton of double plays this year, in large part because Girardi is not sending his runners enough. With the Yankees down 1-0, Cano led off the top of the third with an infield single. Joe didn't send the runner and Molina hit into his first of two double plays. Abreu also grounded into a DP later in the game. The Yanks need to take a page out of the Rays' book and start being more aggressive on the base paths. It could help to spark a dormant offense.
Johnny Damon, LF: (D+) Damon was 0-4 on the day, but picked up the Yanks' only RBI with a ground out in the eighth.
Derek Jeter, SS: (A) At least you can always count on the Captain to get on base. Jeter was 1-3 with a walk.
Bobby Abreu, RF: (F) Just a terrible game. Abreu went 0-4 with two strikeouts and a double play.
Hideki Matsui, DH: (D) A no contact night for Godzilla. He struck out three times and walked once.
Jason Giambi, 1B: (D-) 0-3 with no home runs. The Giamzero is now five for 51 when batting fifth this year, but Girardi continues to put him there for some reason.
Melky Cabrera, CF: (C) 1-4 for the guy who should be batting fifth.
Robinson Cano, 2B: (A-) That's now a seven-game hitting streak for Cano.
Jose Molina, C: (B-) Picked up the only extra-base hit and run scored for the Yankees, but he also grounded into two double plays.
Alberto Gonzalez, 3B: (A+) Oh, look, Gonzalez went 2-3 and is now batting .310. Shocker. Too bad it took a Betemit injury to get him back on the team.
Andy Pettitte, SP: (F) Shortest start of the year for Pettitte, who is not providing the type of consistency the Yankees need out of their No. 2 starter.
Chris Britton, RP: (C-) Gave up a pair of walks, a hit, and a run in two innings when the game was already over.
Jose Veras, RP: (D-) I was watching American Gladiators at this point.
Edwar Ramirez, RP: (A) Struck out the only batter he faced.
Yankees Overall Grade: (F) That's about as bad as it gets.

you give jeter a A for going 1-3??? ive seen you give a B or B+ at most for a 1 for 3 night and don't tell me you gave him an A because he has been getting on base everynight because you say that you grade per game and not per series or the year combined. Also same with Robbie Cano you give him a A- for a seven game hitting streak.. unless he went 2 for 4 or something im not sure but if he had 1 hit and just continued his streak no reason for an A- .... again since you grade per game... otherwise nice report i agree with your consistent low grades for the two G's... Girardi and Giambi .... they deserve it.

Hey Jack, The Big G is third in HRs league wide, leading our team, and amongst the top in RBI and Runs, and Walks too. Dude is slumping avg wise, but if this is bad, wait til he is hot. He certainly gets it from all sides, doesn't he? If he does well, then he should because he makes soooo much money, if he lags on the avg, then behead him, regardless of run production. Imagine where we would be with out the G, last place I am sure.
Not putting YOU on the defensive, just bringing a more postive outlook on things. Especially Jason.

Jack, I realized when computing my first quarter GPAs that I have to start giving the guys higher grades. Jeter was 1-3 with a walk on Monday. That's a .333 avg and a .500 obp. I have to give him an A for that if I'm giving him an F for 0-4 so things will even out in the end.
I didn't give Cano an A- for his seven game hit streak. That was just a comment I was making on his recent performance. He was 1-3 as well but no walk like Jeter so I gave him an A-.
I do like that you're reading my stuff and keeping me in line here, though. Thanks.

We should wait to see the actual team before hitting the panick button. Giambi again? He went 2 for 3 with a walk tonight. Though I dont suspect you will give him props at all. How about Abreus' glove? Write one on that mess in right field, and you get my full praise. For now, we have a back up team playing, and have had it since the beginning of the season. Very, very tough on the Yanks, aren't you? Should have been around in the 80s, you would have had a coronary.

I agree that you can't hit the panic button until they continue to lose once A-Rod and Posada are back, but every team suffers from injuries during a 162 game season and you have to be able to score a few runs with your B-team, especially when your B-team has more talent than most club's starting line.
You're right, I'm spoiled because I didn't suffer through the bad teams in the '80s, but the talent level hasn't changed a great deal since the dynasty of the late '90s. They should still be able to win like they did back then.
