Rose Suffers Late Hamstring Injury
Concerns have once again been raised around the Chicago Bulls after Derrick Rose was forced to leave the team's 100-93 victory over the Toronto Raptors Thursday night with a hamstring injury. He tallied 20 points, four assists, five turnovers and three rebounds before exiting the game.
ESPN Chicago's Nick Friedell had the report:
Turner Sports' Rachel Nichols had more details:
Rose's status is a story that's generated plenty of attention in recent years. He missed all of the 2012-13 season with an ACL injury and a majority of the last campaign due to a torn meniscus. The hope was the 2010-11 MVP could get back to full strength this season.
There was a brief scare when he suffered dual ankle injuries right off the bat. Even though it wasn't a major issue, it showed how anxious the fanbase is when it comes to his health.
Friedell provided comments from the star point guard, who said he's just trying to play it smart with the bigger picture in mind:
"It felt all right. If it was a real need for me to play I think I could have played. But [I'm] just trying to be smart, trying to give it an extra day and thank God that we came out with the win. I believe in my teammates, believe in the team – we made the game hard tonight but we ended up coming out with a victory.
"
After Thursday night's injury, SiriusXM radio host Brian Geltzeiler had his thoughts on how Rose should handle things moving forward:
Rose will need to play a significant role if the Bulls are going to make a charge toward an NBA championship. Missed time throughout the regular season isn't a serious issue as long as he's ready to roll once the playoffs arrive.
As for now, the pressing question is the severity of the latest setback.
Once further evaluation is complete to determine the extent of the injury, the path forward will become a lot easier to determine for both Rose and the Bulls.
Ultimately, coming back after two extended absences in a row is a tough task both physically and mentally. Rose has still his top-end talent when on the court, but questions will linger until he can stay off the injury report for an extended stretch.
Should he miss any games, Aaron Brooks and Kirk Hinrich will probably split time running the offense. They wouldn't be able to replicate Rose's production but are strong enough as a tandem to help Chicago remain on course thanks to its depth.
Further details will be provided as they become available.
