Bobby Cox Is Lucky to Be an Atlanta Brave

Bobby Cox is lucky to be a Brave.  It is as simple as that.

Managers today come and go at an incredible rate.  It seems that for most team owners and presidents, just making the playoffs is no longer acceptable.  Baseball is a cutthroat business and most owners have a "what have you done for me lately" attitude. 

Joe Torre won plenty of championships with the Yankees, but after a couple of years without a World Series, he received the boot.  Joe Girardi won the Manager of the Year award and then was quickly canned by the Marlins.  What is the deal here? 

Last time I checked, only one team can win the World Series each year.  If Mr. Steinbrenner owned every team in the league, we would see 29 new managers each year.  This is an unacceptable trend that cannot continue.

Is there anyone who could question Joe Torre's ability to coach?  He is more than qualified to be the manager of the Yankees and he has proven that he has what it takes to lead his team to the title.  So why then was he fired?

The Yankees should study a page from the book of the Atlanta Braves.

Bobby Cox has led his team to numerous league championships but has only won the World Series one time.  How long would this have been allowed at Yankee Stadium?  If Cox had done the exact same thing with the Yankees, my guess is that he would have been fired years ago.

That is a frightening thought.  Look me in the eye and tell me (with a straight face) that Bobby Cox is not among the elite managers in baseball today. Who would a team find that is better than Cox?

My advice to owners everywhere is, remember that there are thirty teams and none of them are trying to lose.  Only one team can win it all each year and not winning the World Series every year is NOT a sign of bad coaching.

Unless you have hard evidence that your coach is trying to lose games, then maybe try keeping the same head coach for more than a couple of years at a time.  What does it take to secure your spot as a skipper in the Major Leagues?  The answer is simple; have an owner with just a drop of common sense...
