Rob BlanchetteOct 16, 2014

Updates from Friday, Jan. 2

Real Madrid retain firm belief that they lead the race for Marco Reus' signature in 2015, but they face a battle with several clubs, Chelsea chiefly among them.

Ruben Jimenez of Madrid-based publication Marca reports the following:

The Court of Arbitration for Sport's ruling upholding Barça's transfer ban puts Real Madrid very much in the driving seat in the race for Marco Reus. The Borussia Dortmund star has informed the 'Azulgranas' that he is determined to move on at the end of this season - as MARCA revealed exclusively in a special report on 15th December - and so he will not wait around for the punishment to be lifted.

[...] In any case, Real Madrid have a trump card in the shape of a verbal agreement between Florentino Pérez and Dortmund president Reinhard Rauball, which gives 'Los Blancos' first dibs on the Germany international and the right to equal any offer that comes in for him.

"

However, Bruce Archer of the Daily Star notes a report in Le10 Sport that Chelsea are set to make it a fight for Reus' services, claiming Roman Abramovich is under strict orders to land the winger for Jose Mourinho:

"

According to reports in France Jose Mourinho has told Roman Abramovich to get the Germany winger.

[...] The 25-year-old is likely to leave Borussia Dortmund after their awful start to the season. The Champions League regulars find themselves second bottom in the Bundesliga.

"

Updates from Tuesday, Dec. 30

Atletico Madrid have beaten fierce rivals Real to the punch in the hunt for Marco Reus, according to journalist Juan Gato.

It was claimed by Gato on Spanish TV show Punta Pelota that Atletico have sealed a deal to sign Reus in the summer, beating off the likes of Real, Chelsea and Bayern Munich. 101 Great Goals summarises the latest:

"

Spanish tabloid football TV show Punto Pelota dropped a big claim on Monday when journalist Juan Gato announced that Atletico Madrid have an agreement with Borussia Dortmund for Marco Reus.

[...] He went on to say that the deal should come to fruition in the summer provided there are no hiccups along the way.

"

Updates from Thursday, Dec. 18

Marco Reus will not be moving to Bayern Munich... at least not in January. Pep Guardiola has confirmed he will sign nobody during the winter window.

German football writer Cristian Nyari tweeted Guardiola's latest comments:

Updates from Tuesday, Dec. 16

Bayern Munich are already beginning to turn their attention away from Marco Reus, according to BILD (h/t Matt Lawless of Mail Online).

Lawless states Pep Guardiola has begun making moves for Liverpool's Raheem Sterling:

"

According to a report in German sports daily Bild, Bayern boss Pep Guardiola has 'instructed' his brother Pere Guardiola - Luis Suarez's agent - to begin talks with representatives of the England international.

[...] And with Bayern reportedly beginning to grow impatient over Reus, Guardiola is said to be set on sounding out Sterling as an alternative.

"

Updates from Friday, Dec. 12

Publicly, Borussia Dortmund remain adamant Marco Reus will be going nowhere over the next 12 months, despite reported interest from Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool.

However, Chisanga Malata of the Daily Star reports that behind the scenes the German club are readying a move for Stephan El Shaarawy as Reus' replacement:

"

Sources in Italy claim Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp is bracing himself for the departure of Reus by preparing a bid for AC Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy.

Klopp is said to be a huge admirer of the 22-year-old, and numerous publications in Italy claim he will make the Milan hitman his No.1 transfer target if Reus does leave the Westfalenstadion.

"

Updates from Wednesday, Dec. 3

Just 24 hours after Bayern Munich's interest in Marco Reus was played down by a well-respected FIFA agent, Borussia Dortmund have moved to silence claims Real Madrid have first option on the player.

Reus is wanted across Europe, not least by several Premier League giants, but it had been claimed Madrid hold first option on the forward. Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild that is rubbish, per Mark Doyle of Goal.com:

"

It's complete rubbish that there is any kind of right of first refusal [for Madrid].

Marco alone will decide where he will go. What would we do if he activated his clause?

"

Updates from Tuesday, Dec. 2

Bayern Munich, one of the favourites to land Marco Reus should he leave Borussia Dortmund in the near future, have been ruled out of the race by FIFA agent Dirk Hebel.

According to Hebel, who spoke to Kicker, no approach will be made by the German champions. Chisanga Malata of the Daily Star provides the quotes:

"

There are no negotiations between Marco and Bayern.

There has never been any contact.

"

Updates from Monday, Nov. 24

Jose Mourinho has denied Chelsea's reported interest in Marco Reus, via the club's official Twitter feed:

Updates from Friday, Nov. 21

Chelsea have reportedly registered an offer for Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus, according to calciomercato.com via the Metro.

Andre Schurrle has been included in the bid, which is detailed below:

"

According to reports, Chelsea have now lodged an offer worth £20 millon in cash plus Germany winger Schurrle going the other way.

Dortmund are reluctant to sell in the new year, but Chelsea’s huge offer could sway them, with the Bundesliga side also seriously keen on Schurrle.

Chelsea are yet to hear back on the offer but are hopeful of doing business.

"

Updates from Wednesday, Nov. 19

Jose Mourinho will attempt to beat rivals to Marco Reus by making contact with the player's agent, according to latest reports.

Real Madrid and Manchester City are believed to be Chelsea's biggest rivals for Reus, but James Dickenson of the Daily Express reports:

"

With a host of Europe's top clubs clamouring for his services, Chelsea boss Mourinho is hoping to move one step ahead of the pack.

According to sources on the continent, Mourinho has asked Chelsea officials to contact the agent of Reus in the hope of opening talks.

"

Updates from Thursday, Nov. 13

The fight for Marco Reus is coming down to a shootout between Real Madrid and Chelsea, according to the latest reports to emerge from Spain.

Reus has been linked to Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona, but those clubs are set to miss out, according to Marca via 101 Great Goals:

Updates from Monday, Nov. 10

Marco Reus will not leave Borussia Dortmund in January or next summer, according to Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff.

Reus has been linked to Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona, but PA Sport (h/t ESPN FC) quotes Bierhoff saying to Sky television:

"

I can still see [Reus] playing for Dortmund. Dortmund is a guarantee for him. I know that Marco also has his heart in Dortmund. He knows what he's got there and he treasures it too.

Marco is the kind of person who needs to be in settled surroundings, but of course you do also get envious of your rivals when they are lifting the trophies.

When a club like Real Madrid or Barcelona want to make you their big summer signing, then you do ask yourself if you will ever get this chance again. I just hope this issue doesn't weigh Marco down as he's being confronted with it almost on a daily basis.

"

Reus' replacement, should he leave, may have been identified by Borussia Dortmund, who reportedly want Andre Schurrle if their prized asset seeks pastures new in the next 12 months.

Bild reports the news, via Dov Rawson of 101 Great Goals, who summarises:

"

Winger Marco Reus is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund next summer, with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid & Liverpool all reportedly interested.

Bild yesterday claimed Borussia Dortmund may look to replace Marco Reus with fellow international Andre Schurrle.

"

Updates from Thursday, Nov. 6

Marco Reus wants to ignore all interest from the Premier League and Bundesliga in order to join Barcelona when their transfer ban expires.

That's according to Ben Jefferson of the Express, who has disappointing news for Manchester City, United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich:

"

Reports in Spain suggest that Reus has no intention of leaving Dortmund either in January or the summer as he has his heart set on a move to Barcelona.

Reus believed he was headed to the Camp Nou last summer, only for Barca's signing of Luis Suarez to scupper a deal.

But he remains optimistic the Catalan outfit will come back in for him as soon as their transfer embargo - which is in place for the next two transfer windows - comes to an end.

"

Updates from Tuesday, Nov. 4

Manchester City believe they hold the edge in the race for Marco Reus due to the financial package they will offer at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United all remain interested, but Ralph Ellis of the Daily Mail reports:

"

The 25-year-old’s deal runs until 2017 but has a release clause enabling him to join any club who meet Dortmund’s asking price of 25million euros.

Bundesliga champions Bayern are prepared to match it, but so are City. And Manuel Pellegrini’s club are confident they can outbid their rivals on the wage front by putting together a package worth in excess of £200,000 a week.

[...] City believe they are in pole position to lure him to the Barclays Premier League and are hopeful that increasingly strained relations between Bayern and Dortmund will deter the winger from switching to Munich.

"

Updates from Friday, Oct. 31

Marco Reus issued a statement over his future on Friday, but it has done little to clarify where he will play his football beyond January.

The Dortmund star has been linked to Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Madrid but was quoted saying by Jack Wilson of the Daily Star:

"

At the moment there are a lot of people talking about my future. There is a lot of speculation and a lot is being written.

So I would like to take this opportunity to say that other people are thinking more about my future than me.

"

Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp responded to Bayern Munich's constant courting of Reus, warning the German champions karma will bite back.

Munich have offered regular comment on the uncertain future of Dortmund's prized asset, and Klopp finally responded to Bild, per Alex Sharp of the Mail Online:

"

In our current position, where this causes relatively little enjoyment, it is just not worth it.

However, I believe that life is fair. Whoever behaves badly while they succeed, can get payback later.

"

Real Madrid are reportedly set to win the race for Reus, according to Spanish news outlet Fichajes.

Squawka picks up on the latest regarding the much-sought-after Dortmund star:

"

It is rumoured that Marco Reus will be available for as little as €25 million next summer but reports in Spain now claim that European champions, Real Madrid, have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to take him to the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season.

"

Updates from Wednesday, Oct. 29

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed they will halt contract talks with Marco Reus until after the looming Bundesliga showdown with Bayern Munich.

Bayern have previously expressed interest in the forward, but sporting director Michael Zorc says he doesn't want Reus' future to become a sub-plot of the match, per Sport Bild and via Stefan Coerts of Goal.com:

"

Nothing has changed about our intentions to continue our collaboration with Marco.

But the current situation demands full focus from everybody at the club. Our biggest priority at the moment is to get out of this difficult situation. Everything else comes after that for now.

"

Updates from Wednesday, Oct. 22

Real Madrid are the new favourites to land Marco Reus, who is reportedly only willing to leave Dortmund if his destination is the Spanish capital.

Chisanga Malata of the Daily Star reports on news coming out of Spain:

"

Sources in Spain claim that Reus is willing to turn down a move to the Premier League in order to seal a switch to Real Madrid.

Spanish newspaper MercaFutbol also claim Reus has made Madrid his first choice destination, and say he won't leave Dortmund for anyone else.

"

Updates from Monday, Oct. 20

Marco Reus has been encouraged to join Bayern Munich by World Cup winner Mario Gotze.

Bayern's charm offensive appears to be growing toward the Dortmund star, amid links to Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. Gotze told Sky, per Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC:

"

Marco and I get along really well. I am also happy to see him with the national team.

We had a great year at Dortmund, and of course I'd be happy he if were to join us. But that's his decision.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has cast further doubt over Marco Reus' future with Borussia Dortmund, stating he is aware of a release clause in the player's current contract and that the Bavarian giants might be interested in activating it.

Nick Lustig of the Daily Star quotes the Bayern supremo speaking to Sport 1 about Reus, who is wanted across Europe due to a £28 million buyout clause:

"

If a German international has an exit clause and his contract is running out, Bayern is obliged to think about him. With Marco Reus, his release clause is known. Whether we deal with it, I cannot seriously predict. We've talked too little internally about the subject.

There are many great clubs from other countries who would be interested in signing Marco Reus. Of course they [Dortmund] will try to extend his contract. But at the end of the day the player will decide what he wants.

"

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are said to all be interested in purchasing the flying winger, per Lustig, but they will all be concerned that Bayern appear to have their eye on Reus' situation at BVB.

Bayern have previously raided Dortmund for the talents of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski, who both defected to Germany's biggest club when given the opportunity.

Reus has developed into one of the most potent attackers in Europe under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and has starred since returning to the club in 2012.

Last season, the player's statistics in the Bundesliga were exceptional—scoring 16 times and providing 13 assists in 30 matches, per WhoScored.com.

There is little doubt Bayern will try to make a move for such a German player and add him to their growing list of exceptional talents.

But a move to the Premier League could be of interest to Reus, with the large sums of money he could earn in England, rather than the more modest wages of his home country.

And Ben Johnson of Squawka.com says the challenge of moving to England would entice Reus:

"

Despite Reus’ obvious love for Dortmund, a new challenge in the competitive Premier League would be hard to resist. With the likes of Angel di Maria, Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez moving to England to ply their trade this summer, the English top division is building its repertoire of superstars every transfer window as it seeks to confirm its status as the best league in the world.

The addition of Reus, whether it be in London, Manchester or Liverpool, would help cement that – not to mention adding some world class talent to one side’s attacking options.

Manchester United have spent big in recent months and at the quoted £28 million, the price tag would not stop an aggressive move by them.

Reus has started the season in a more central role for Dortmund, but he is a fantastic winger when in full flight. United could pair him in the wide positions with Angel Di Maria to provide the service that Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie need.

But he would equally be at home at either Arsenal or Liverpool. The Gunners are in more need of a defensive linchpin, as both United and Liverpool are, but Reus fits the bill of a typical Arsene Wenger attacker. His pace and accurate passing would suit the North London team.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a talisman after the exit of Luis Suarez, and Reus could be that player for Brendan Rodgers. His explosive style would make him an icon at Anfield.

However, Bayern are likely to get the biggest shot at attracting the player, and the chance to join Germany's biggest club might be too big of a temptation for Reus.
