Harem of the Goddess: Byron with the 2009 SEC Preview
Hey Football Fiends!
For theย third year in a row, my Vol pal Byron is here to provide us with an SEC Preview. So without further ado, Iโm turning the reigns over to Bryon Earnheart for the day.
Well, college football fans, the time of the year weโve been looking forward to is drawing nigh.ย
Thatโs right, itโs college football time!ย
I donโt know about you all, but it couldnโt get here soon enough!ย When Iโm finding myself actually caring about baseball, I know Iโve been without my football for way too long.ย Sadly, golf isnโt even doing it for me anymoreโฆI just need my fix.ย
I need my Bloody Marys and my "GameDay" and my nachos and my BBQ sandwich and my Miller High Life and my couch and my wife to put up with me lounging on the couch all Saturday.ย
Itโs time, sports fans. Itโs time.
Since the last SEC preview, Iโve found myself in a bit of a different situation: I got married.ย Now, thankfully, she likes football and is somewhat conversational on the subject.ย She knows enough about the BCS to pull for the teams for which we need pulling.ย She got as excited as I did last year during that Texas-Texas gameโnot that we had anything to gain, but whatย a game!ย
Every once in awhile, I have to explain to her some rule or why a coach would call a certain play at a certain time in the game, but thatโs understandable. And, at least, she puts up with me sitting around hollering at the TV.
So, with the marriage as a theme, Iโd like to go through the SEC with some quick-hit thoughts.
ย
Something Ole
Well, not quite "something old," but you get the gist.ย
Iโll say more on this later, but if thereโs a team in the SEC (not named Florida)ย that has the opportunity to excel this year, itโs Ole Miss.ย
Thatโs rightโOle Miss.ย
The Rebels have a great, proven quarterback, a decent coach (my personal opinion of Houston Nutt aside), a favorable schedule, and probably a top 15 national ranking.ย
"Wait," you may be saying "what about LSU and Alabama?!ย Saban is one season away from curing cancer and completely reinventing Western Civilization!"
Well, all of that may be true, but he and Miles both have unproven and youngย quarterbacks (not a good thing in this league, usually)ย and they have to go to Oxford to play.ย While Oxford is not as intimidating as Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge, itโs still a road game, and Ole Miss does not have to travel to those aforementioned sights this year.ย
So, in my opinion, the West is Ole Missโ to lose.ย Will they choke?ย Probably at some point along the wayโitโs almost inevitable in this league.ย
With that said, at this stage of the year, itโsย Ole Miss'ย division to lose.
ย
Something New
There areย threeย new coaches are in the SEC now, not to mention theย two โnewโ coaches last year (Both Nutt and Petrino seemed to come into situations that were not their making, so, theyโre still new to me).ย
Lane Kiffin, USCโs offensive coordinator when they ruled the world, is at UT and is writing checks that Iย hope his butt can cash.ย
Dan Mullen is at Mississippi State now, hoping to โspreadโ some of the special sauce that he and Urban Meyer have cooked up over the years.ย
Gene Chizik joins the SEC at Auburn after he managed to completely stink up Iowa State.ย This had to be the most bone-headed hire in the history of the SECโand I am counting Ed Orgeron in this!
That leads me to my next point...
ย
Something Borrowed
Time and Trouble.ย
I get the distinct impression that teams now are just borrowing trouble from some of these hires.ย
Gene Chizikโreally?ย
Why do I get the feeling this has got "Ron Zook" written all over it, or maybe even worse.ย
In the interest of fairness, Iโll throw my beloved Vols here as well.ย If Kiffin doesnโt work out,ย UT isย screwed.ย Badly.ย
And when you think about it, thatโs two solid programs with a great deal of history thatโve gotten kicked in the nether regions over a dumb hireโThe Gridiron Goddess says: "Gee, sort of like USC in the 1990s."
All of this being said, if they pay off, theyโll pay off huge.ย Itโs sort of like getting in on a good stock.ย If it takes off, youโre a flippinโ genius.ย If not, then the bank is coming for your home and Little Junior is not going to college.
Now, why do I care about this in a Preview column?ย Because thatโs what the fans of these schools with new coaches are watching for.ย
We want to see improvement.ย Most UT fansโthe reasonable ones who actually went there and donโt have โRocky Topโ as car horn or doorbellโarenโt expecting a 12-1 season.ย But, perception is on trial this year for at leastย five teams in the league, and we really have no idea what 4-5 teams are going to look like once they step out on the field.ย
The Court of Public Football Opinion, Southeastern District, is cruel, and fans are going to want to see improvement.ย Theyโll want to see close games.ย Theyโll want to see their teams "in" games that they should not even be in.ย
We all want what Florida has, what Alabama is building, and what LSU is probably losing. But it canโt happen to everyone, so someone is borrowing trouble!
ย
Something Blue
So, Iโm going to go ahead and spoil the fun and pick Florida and Ole Miss in Atlanta, and you have no idea how much that crawls under my skin.ย
I hate these two teams passionately.ย Why?ย I just do.ย
And what team has a more crystal clear path to the National Championship than Florida?ย Letโs review:ย the Gators'ย entire defenseย is coming back, they have Tim Tebow, who rivals Chuck Norris in freakish talents, and an easy schedule.ย
Sure, they have LSU in Baton Rouge, but, trust me on this, LSUโs defensive coordinator wouldnโt know what to do with Floridaโs offense if he was handed the playbook and given a month to study.ย Sure, itโll be a tight game forย three quarters, but Chavis will start giving the receivers nice eight-yard cushions.ย
Itโll be so nice to watch another defense implode on itself and not have the accompanying arm pains and shortness of breath.ย
So, with all of thatโGators, yet again, itโs all you.
Here, in my predicted order of finish by division, is the SEC.
ย
SEC West
ย
1. Ole Missย
I think Iโve explained my reasoning above for this.ย
I just like a team thatโs got a great quarterback, good depth, anย able defense, good coaching, and a favorable schedule.ย
Now, the Rebelsย may choke.ย But at this point in the year, I just canโt bring myself to say they canโt win the West.
ย
2. Alabamaย
Yes, I know Nick Saban is Godโs gift to mankind in the South and is the reincarnation of Bear Bryant.ย
But without a provenย quarterback, even the Bear didnโt win every game.ย
I like everything about this team but the Ole Miss game and the young quarterback.
ย
3. Arkansas
Bobby Petrino has proven he can win games, in my opinion, when heโs got the quarterback.ย
Mallet is that type ofย quarterback if you watched any of his Michigan games.ย Heโs got the skills (to pay the bills...sorry, couldnโt help it!).ย
There are some questions on defenseโlike, it it any good? But, I think the offense could save the team a few times.
ย
4. LSU
Iโve just seen John Chavisโ defenses crumble too many times in the presence of teams that can pass the ball to get too excited.ย In addition, Jarrett Lee did nothing to impress me.ย
Iโm going to go out on a limb hereโaย really big limbโand say that 2009 could be the beginning of the downward slide of LSU.
ย
5. Mississippi Stateย
As this is myย second favorite team in the league, Iโm pumped about this year.ย This is one of those teams thatย has to show improvement.ย
Perception is the name of the game here.ย Mullen should bring a great deal of excitement to the team, and, coupled with a punishingย running backย (pending his DUI situation) and very serviceable defense, it might be a decent year.
Look forย MSU to sneak in the bowl picture.
ย
6. Auburn
Crashed and burned, huh Mav?ย
I just canโt find anything good to say about this team, Iโm sorry.ย
I donโt hate the Tigers, but I just canโt find any reason to put them ahead of anyone in the division.ย
Gene Chizik?ย Really?ย Thatโs who you thought could do a better job than Tuberville?ย
Last year, Kodi Burns didnโt know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt.ย It was embarrassing.ย So, has it gotten better now that you got the Chizik?ย
The only good thing I can say, seriously, about Auburn, is that acquiring Gus Malzahn will probably save their butts some.ย But if he doesnโt have the tools (and Burns didย nothing to prove that he has the skills), it wonโt matter.
ย
SEC East
ย
1. Floridaย
OK, save me the energy here. Does anyone really argue this?ย
We can argue it if you want to, but youโre wrong.ย
This team reminds me of stacking your team on NCAA Football on PlayStation, turning it to JV level, and startingย to getย topย five recruiting classes each year: Itโs almost not fun to watch.ย
And, trust me, this praise is not because I like the Gators.ย I hate them passionately!ย But theyโre really freaking good.
ย
2. Tennesseeย
Now, before this gets attacked, let me just say that UT, UGA, and South Carolina (maybe even Vandy) could make a bid here.ย None of these teams have great quarterbacks, some have better defenses, andย some have more favorable schedules.ย
This really is a testament to how far down the East will be this year.ย
With that said, I am going with my biases here.ย I trust UTโsย quarterback aboutย as much asย Iโd trust Simon Cowell to break a smile and say something positive (Dang, my wifeโs got me watching American Idol. Iโm sorry!).ย Crompton justโI canโt even type his name without feeling the bile rise up.ย
However, the offense is supposedly easier to understandย this season.ย And it better be, becauseย God knows he shorted enoughย five-yard passes last year.ย Confusing stuff, I know!ย
Theย defense should be good, and some goodย running backย depth should giveย UT a fighting chance.
ย
3. Georgia
Again, there'sย not much difference here in UGA and UT.ย
The Bulldogs have good depth, probably a more suspect defense, and an unproven quarterback.ย But UGA is one of the best-coached teams in the league.ย
They lost a TON of talent though that they canโt easily replace coming out of the gate,ย asย itโll take time to develop.
ย
4. South Carolinaย
Well, it looks like Garciaโs finally been paroled and allowed to play football again.ย I know that was a cheap shot, but given all the crap that SatanโI mean, Spurrierโhas dealt over the years, paybackโs a mother.ย
Theirย defense should be fairly solid,ย and Iโm very impressed with Norwood as a linebacker.ย Heโs probably one of the most underrated players in the league.
ย
5. Vanderbilt
Coming off the bowl win wasย huge for this program.ย
Vanderbiltย always has a fairly decentย defense butย lacks in the skill spots on offense.ย Well, this year,ย its bringing back the team leaders in passing and rushing and 2/3 of the leaders in receiving.ย
Look for the Commodoresย to make some splashโpossibly another bowl bid.ย Also, as I said above, donโt count them out to be higher than this.ย Last year, this team gave Mississippi State and Georgia all either team wanted.ย
While Iโm not a big believer in "moral victories," since you still lose the game, Vandyโs the kind of team with the kind of talent that can slip up on most any team at any time.
ย
6. Kentucky
I sort of miss those few years where Kentucky was good.ย
Now, I just donโt see it.ย
I will say that they had a heck of bowl game.ย The Wildcats willย win games.ย They wonโt get creamed in every game they play.ย
But aย small running game and an averageย quarterback wonโt moveย a teamย up this list too much, Iโm afraid.ย UK lost some key defensive players, as well.
ย
So, thatโs the year in preview.ย I see Ole Miss and Florida going to Nashville, with Florida beating them senseless.ย Revenge is a tough pill to swallow.ย
Then, Florida will probably take on the winner of the Texas-Oklahoma game for the national title.ย
Who will it be?ย I donโt care enough about the Big 12 to even begin to guess that.ย Both of those teams are good, and itโll probably be a great game either way.
