Kevin Ogletree Reportedly to Sign with Giants: Latest Contract Details, Reaction

With Victor Cruz lost for the rest of the 2014 NFL season, the New York Giants will attempt to at least in part remedy the problem with the addition of Kevin Ogletree.

ProFootballTalk reported that the Giants will sign the former Detroit Lions wide receiver:

ESPN's Josina Anderson confirmed Ogletree's arrival in New York:

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reported earlier in the day Ogletree worked out for New York on Tuesday as the organization looked for somebody to help offset Cruz's injury. Buffalo Bills wide receiver Mike Williams was also a reported target for the team, but the combined cost of his contract and trade away from Buffalo were probably too high.

Vacchiano explained that the Giants weren't looking to add a major difference-maker:

"

Whoever the Giants sign – if they even sign someone -- he’ll likely be the fourth receiver at best, though. The Giants seem ready to stand pat for now with Rueben Randle and Odell Beckham as starters and Preston Parker in the slot. One of the three receivers on their practice squad will likely be promoted to the active roster by the end of the week, too.

"

Before the signing was confirmed, ESPN.com's Dan Graziano questioned how much value Ogletree would add to the Giants:

This is Ogletree's sixth year in the league. He started out with the Dallas Cowboys in 2009 and remained there through 2012 before brief stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions. Through his career, the 27-year-old has 78 receptions for 999 yards and six touchdowns.

Heading into Week 7, the Giants are 3-3 and sit third in the NFC East. According to Football Outsiders, their pass offense ranks 23rd in defense-adjusted value over average.

Ogletree likely won't turn New York's air attack into an elite unit, but he provides some depth to the team's receiving corps. The team had precious few viable outside options to replace Cruz, and at the very least, Ogletree is an experienced wideout who's no stranger to the NFC East from his years with the Cowboys.
