Come to Think of It: The Inspiring Message of "A Glove of Their Own"

When I received the Facebook note from Bob Solomon, "coach, husband, and proud father", I must admit I was somewhat skeptical.  After all, as a writer, we often get requests to support a cause and sometimes the reality doesn't meet the hype.

But in the case of the wonderful, award-winning children's book "A Glove of Their Own," I am pleased to report to fellow 'Bleacher Creatures' that this is one grassroots movement that is more than worth your time and attention.

The story is about a group of young boys who, despite not having any real equipment, play and love the game of baseball.  However, a gift from a stranger teaches them the spirit of “play it forward” and that’s the idea behind the grassroots effort Salomon is spearheading.

In short, it is not only a truly amazing story, but it is such a worthwhile cause that I know you would be enriched by the effort.

The book is a fun, easy read that tugs at your heartstrings.  My wife and children all took turns reading the book and all came away with such a strong impression that I felt compelled to tell you about it.

Wonderfully illustrated, it is a book filled with bright, glossy images. But it also presents a message that is very inspiring and touching.  It hearkens back to a time that I recall fondly in my youth.  Yet it as relevant to our lives today as ever before.

The inspiration for this story was born from a birthday party for one of the author's children.  Unlike most birthday celebrations, this party requested donations of baseball equipment in lieu of gifts.  That equipment was donated to children who normally do without.

The central theme revolves around paying forward, giving back and extending friendship, all for the love of the game.

"A Glove of Their Own" is for the kids who pick up the bat to choose captains and pick teams, who have known the joy of playing in a neighborhood field or an empty lot.  You’ll find no coaches, no concession stands, and sometimes just an old bat and ball.  But once the first pitch is thrown, you’ll find the real heart and soul of America.  You’ll find baseball in its purest form.
