Will the Michigan Wolverines football program ever be prominent again? A program with such great tradition and history has turned into a punching bag for the Big Ten.
The Wolverines were a lousy 2-6 in conference play last season and finished the season with an overall record of 3-9. There are several factors that could have led to the program’s struggles; the coaching transition, the switch to Rich Rodriguez’s spread offense, who the hell’s our QB?, etc…but I’m led to believe scUM will continue to struggle.
For one, Rich Rod is a bum. As much as people praise the guy, he just doesn’t impress me, nor does his spread offense. The Wolverines still have a big question mark at their QB position. Who is going to start? Freshman Tate Forcier? Nick Sheridan? David Cone? Regardless of who takes snaps this season, they aren’t going to get the job done.
Michigan does have a nice recruiting class coming in, ranking 8th on Rivals.com’s 2009 Team Recruit Rankings board, so the future of the Wolverines’ football program has potential. My guess is a couple of those recruits will dip out of town after a season or two in order to play at a more successful program.
As for the Big Ten conference, the Buckeyes continue to own the pathetic Wolverines. Ohio State has beaten Michigan 5 straight seasons, with the most embarrassing defeat coming last season when OSU handled UM 42-7. The Wolverines aren’t even in the top half of the Big Ten. It’s pretty pathetic when you finish 2nd to last in the Big Ten conference, only ahead of the Indiana Hoosiers.
The Wolverines have had some embarrassing losses in the last couple years. They were humiliated by Toledo last season (a team that finished 3-9 overall in the MAC conference) when they lost 10-13, and who can forget that ridiculous season-opening home field loss to Appalachian State in 2007. Pathetic.
Michigan will be lucky to win 4 conference games this year. Maybe they should focus more on the non-conference games (Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Delaware State) so they don’t suffer a shameful non-conference loss for the 3rd straight season.
