Manchester United’s Owen Hargreaves: One More Step

Jeff HarbertMay 9, 2008

Manchester United’s Owen Hargreaves is pushing his team mates to drive on and win a second consecutive Premier League title this weekend.

The Red Devils are level on points with title-rivals Chelsea, but possess a far superior goal difference. A win against Wigan on Sunday will be enough to secure the title for Sir Alex Ferguson’s troops.

Owen Hargreaves is one of the few Manchester United players who was not involved in last year’s competition which saw the Red Devils win their first title in four years.  Now Hargreaves, desperate to win his first Premiership medal, is urging his team mates to prepare for another battle in order to clinch the title.

“We’ve got 90 minutes to play and it’s a great position to be in,” the England international said. “We’ve had no midweek game so we’ve put in some good training and hopefully we will be ready for the weekend.”

“To be in this position feels comfortable for me, I’ve been there before,” said Hargreaves. “At the start of the season if somebody had offered us one game, just 90 minutes, to win the league, we would have jumped at that. We’re in a good position."

With the title so close now, the anxiety is becoming unbearable for some fans. But after a long and hard season, Hargreaves hopes United’s effort will pay dividends on Sunday by lifting the Premier League trophy.

“We’ve worked so hard all season. Not just the players, the staff, and all the time and energy everyone puts in at this club. That’s what makes this a special club. So for them, to see us win the league would be a fantastic moment. We’ll go out on the pitch on Sunday and give everything we have for 90 minutes.”

If Manchester United wins the title on Sunday, it will not only mean their efforts this season were worth it, but will denote United as commendable champions. The Red Devils have scored 78 goals this season and have played with a free flowing attacking type of football that any team on the planet would be proud of.

Meanwhile, the potential champions have conceded the least amount of goals in the league this season, with United’s defense only allowing 22 goals past them in thirty-seven games.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if United can prevail this weekend and secure the title they are more than worthy of winning.
