Steve Smith Sr. Tells Panthers to Mow His Lawn, Nails Their Coffin Shut

Dan CarsonOct 1, 2014

Steve Smith Sr.'s destruction of the Carolina Panthers secondary Sunday should have come with a NSFW warning.

After promising "blood and guts" when he played the Panthers, the 35-year-old wideout gutted his former team and did backstrokes in the viscera, catching two touchdowns and amassing 139 yards.

The dominant performance made Smith the oldest NFL player to rack up 400 receiving yards in his first four games, and the Baltimore Ravens wideout celebrated with a eulogy and a small request.

Black and Blue Review's Bill Voth uploaded sideline video of Smith miming putting a nail in the Panthers' coffin and asking his former team to mow his lawn in North Carolina. It is a Smith moment of the most superb (and fittingly NSFW) vintage.

Warning: Video contains NSFW language.

A nail in the coffin, a yardwork demand and an "ice up" callback joke? Smith would have needed to joke about Jake Delhomme being a better person than a passer to outdo himself on this occasion.

Smith followed up his performance by defending himself on WFNZ The Fan in Charlotte on Wednesday. Sports Talk Radio 610's Chris Kroeger reports that Smith addressed recent reports that he had asked to be cut from the Panthers in the spring.

Smith also told hosts that Panthers coach Ron Rivera didn't come to him personally before the Panthers made the decision to remove him from the franchise.

Clearly, Smith and the Panthers have some unresolved issues. But that's neither here nor there.

We must live in the Football Now, which by all appearances is the Season of Smith. He can't be stopped, contained or prevented from dropping his historic one-liners. Randy Moss in his most bushy-haired heyday couldn't keep up with Smith's current line of quotables.

Relish Smith while he's here, everyone. Most of us won't appreciate the treasure we had in this fun-sized dynamo until he's gone.
