The Cobras reached the same score, for the loss of five wickets, with Engelbrecht scrambling two off the final ball.
A display of power hitting from Carter powered the Tridents’ total.
The 26-year-old left-hander hit five sixes and 10 boundaries in making 111 not out from just 68 balls.
"So far 8 centuries have been scored in #CLT20. Warner hit 2 - NBroom, DHarris, APuttick, Q de Kock, Williamson & Jonathan Carter each hit 1.

Opener Dilshan Munaweera was the only other batsman to make any sort of contribution, with 42 from 21 balls before being run out in the 11th over.
The Cobras had an opening stand of 56 inside five overs from Hashim Amla and Richard Levi and were 99-1 in the 11th over.

However their run chase stuttered, and Engelbrecht hit a boundary and then three consecutive twos from the final four balls to tie the scores and force the thrilling extra over.
Both teams face an uphill battle to reach the semi-finals, with Barbados losing their opening two games and the Cobras recording their first win in three attempts.
The top two in Group B reach the last four, and Hobart Hurricanes and Kings XI Punjab already have two wins.
