Week 16 Rundown

In the first full week after the All-Star break, most teams are starting the week with the back end of their rotations. This is not the best week for pitching since most of the aces pitched over the weekend. 

Tommy Hanson leads the way for the two-start pitchers this week, followed by last year’s American League Cy Young winner Cliff Lee. The Yankees have also made room in their rotation for Sergio Mitre, who hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2007.

Carlos Quentin is slated to make his return sometime this week, which will bring more stability to the White Sox offense and help them in a run for the American Central crown. He is hoping that he can finish out the season injury-free, after finishing his minor league rehab assignment last week.


American league injury updates

Vladimir Guerrero has been cleared to ride a stationary bike, after the Angels placed him on the disabled list with a strained left knee prior to the all-star break.

On July 16, Torii Hunter said that the pain has gone down in his strained right adductor and hopes to be back in the Angels lineup by the last week of July.

The Angels Juan Rivera made an early exit from their July 18 game with tightness in his right leg.

Justin Duchscherer is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment July 26 and hopes to return to the Athletics' rotation by late August.

The Blue Jays' center fielder Vernon Wells missed his third straight game July 19 and hopes to return to the lineup by July 21.

After having left shoulder surgery, Adrian Beltre is slated to return to the Mariners to start a rehab assignment July 21.

After fracturing his right ring finger, Nelson Cruz was scratched from the Rangers' lineup on Sunday with hope to return Monday.

Matt Harrison of the Rangers is scheduled for a rehab start July 22 after being sidelined by bicep tightness.

After an early exit from July 18 game Scott Kazmir says he feels fine and will make his next scheduled start July 23.

Daisuke Matsuzaka has now started a shoulder strengthening workout and looks like he is about one month away from returning to the Red Sox.

The Royals have placed Gil Meche on the disabled list following a cortisone shot on July 18, but should be back in the rotation July 27.

The Tigers have once again placed Joel Zumaya on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

For the first time since his injury, Kevin Slowey played catch without pain on July 18, with the hope of returning to the Twins rotation by late July.

After completing his minor league rehab assignment, Carlos Quentin is set to return to the White Sox after suffering left foot plantar fasciitis.

National league injury updates

For the third straight day, the Astros Lance Berkman was out of the lineup once again on Sunday and will be going for tests on July 20.

The Brewers are awaiting the results form Dave Bush’s MRI, after he suffered another setback last week.

Rick Ankiel has decided to play through his issues revealed in him MRI and is listed as day-to-day for the Cardinals.

After fracturing his big right toe, Ryan Dempster is scheduled for x-rays on July 23 in the hopes of returning to the Cubs rotation by the last week of July.

The Cubs had to scratch All-Star Ted Lilly on Saturday after the team found inflammation in his knee and is listed as day-to-day.

The Cubs have reported that catcher Geovany Soto has been making fast progress at their minor league complex and is set to return to the team in the first week of August.

Chris Snyder of the Diamondbacks took place in assorted defensive drills July 18 and is set to return later this month.

After missing the whole season to this point, Jason Schmidt is scheduled to start for the Dodgers this week after being sidelined from having shoulder surgery.

The Giants have reported that Randy Johnson is still three weeks away from throwing off of a mound, with a target return on late August.

Matt Lindstrom threw a 40-pitch simulated game on Sunday for the Marlins and should be set to return to the bullpen in early August.

After playing in a simulated game July 16, Jose Reyes is still hoping to return to the Mets later on this month.

The Mets Fernando Nieve was carted off the field July 19 after straining his right quad.

Tim Hudson threw 27 pitches over two innings in a rehab start for the Braves on Sunday, and is set to return to the starting rotation sometime late August.

The Nationals have placed pitcher Scott Olsen on the disabled list with left shoulder and back stiffness, but is retroactive to July 11.

The Padres have reported that pitcher Jake Peavy had his protective boot removed from his leg July 16.

Pedro Martinez threw a 55-pitch bullpen session for the Phillies on July 18 and reported no soreness in his pitching arm.

The Reds ace Edinson Volquez threw on flat ground from up to 120 feet on July 18, and is still on pace to return to the team in early August.
