Arsenal vs. Southampton: Capital One Cup Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info, More

Tom SunderlandSep 22, 2014

Debatable fortunes in the summer transfer market have led Arsenal and Southampton to top-four billings in the Premier League, and the in-form powers clash on Tuesday in the Capital One Cup.

Arsene Wenger's side dusted themselves down after a 2-0 drubbing at the hands of Borussia Dortmund last week to earn a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, while the Saints nicked an equally valuable 1-0 result at Swansea City.

This fixture may not have had the makings of such an epic encounter five weeks ago, but resurgent results make this an English head-to-head one wouldn't want to miss this early in the campaign.

Koeman's Arsenal Renaissance

Despite standing as a newcomer to English football management, this week's test won't be the first time Ronald Koeman has taken on the Gunners.

The 2002-03 Champions League campaign saw the Dutchman, then manager of Ajax, take the Godenzonen past Arsenal over two legs, drawing 1-1 in north London before guarding a 0-0 stalemate in Amsterdam.

His job in not only maintaining Southampton's strength but very arguably making them a more daunting prospect in the wake of a summer exodus has been a remarkable one. However, Koeman isn't getting ahead of himself, quoted by Goal.com's Matthew Rogerson after Saturday's win in south Wales, saying:

"

It's nice for the fans and everyone who loves the [club] but as a manager, and as technical staff, we have to keep quiet and continue what we are doing. There is no time to celebrate or watch the table too much. Football changes very fast and you have to prepare yourself that way.

It was a different win; a tough one, a difficult one against a strong Swansea. After the [sending-off], it changed. Always those kinds of decisions of the referee are difficult for one [team] and better for another. We had the patience to wait, create the positions and score a great goal.

I said at half-time: 'the worst result is 0-0, wait for the moment and be patient for the real good moments to create'. We didn't do it often but once or twice was enough.

"

Victor Wanyama got the sole effort that would steer the Saints past their opponents, and Koeman is once again engineering an astute squad, none too reliant on one or two players in particular.

One could say his job now is an even more difficult one than that of 10 years ago, when it was with a strong Ajax side that he edged his way past the Gunners, hoping to defy the odds on Tuesday and replicate that feat.

Key Battle

Aaron Ramsey vs. Morgan Schneiderlin

Had the summer transfer window taken the smallest of diversions, Morgan Schneiderlin may well have lined up for this fixture as part of the opposition. However, as things have played out, he remained at St. Mary's and is playing a more pivotal role for his side than ever.

Stars Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Calum Chambers and Rickie Lambert were all granted their exits, the Daily Star's Chisanga Malata reporting back in August just how eager the Saints were to retain Schneiderlin following those departures.

And in Aaron Ramsey, the Frenchman has a tough individual battle on his hands, Wenger's playmaker having evolved in a box-to-box player who requires attention in all aspects, both attacking and defending.

Schneiderlin has also come along nicely in that regard as well, though, and Squawka points to his 2014-15 scoring statistics in illustrating exactly that aspect of his new and improved dimensions:

Ramsey, meanwhile, hasn't quite hit the ground running with the same ease that he did in 2013-14, with which the Mirror's John Cross agrees:

Both players are offering a lot as balanced and rounded anchors while ensuring their threat is felt by the opposition of late, and it makes for a heady collision come Tuesday.

Having been so instrumental for their respective teams in recent times, their struggle for possession will have a major influence in the epicentre where possession is decided, Schneiderlin hoping to beat those who might have come to be his employers.
