5 Players Who Deserve Mexico Chance in October Friendlies

Karla Villegas GamaSep 16, 2014

Mexico are set to face Honduras and Panama in October. These games will be the perfect opportunity for Miguel Herrera to take a look at more footballers.

El Tri's coach needs to put together two different squads for 2015 because there are two tournaments during the summer.

First, the Copa America. For this event the squad will probably be a B-team full of youngsters, since Mexico don't belong to CONMEBOL. Still, they will also need to prepare for the 2016 Summer Olympics, and this competition will be a good start.

Second, the Gold Cup. This will be Herrera's priority because he needs to win it in order to get a shot at playing the 2017 Confederations Cup. Since the United States secured the 2013 edition, they have half the tickets for the tournament.

This is why El Piojo has to try as many footballers as possible. He'll need between 44 and 46 talented and committed players to pull through.

Having said that, why not start with the following five?

Jesus Manuel Corona

1 of 5

Jesus Manuel Corona was a thriving force when he played in Mexico. Since he turned 21 years old he has been playing in Europe (2013).

He is a powerful and an explosive footballer through the left flank. He can play as a midfielder or forward. His speed was fundamental in the 2013/14 season, where he scored twice in 15 appearances, as per Squawka.

Corona has become a game-changer for Twente. He may not be an undisputed starter, but he makes quite an impact whenever he steps into the pitch.

This season Corona has already proved his worth. He appeared in the Eredivisie's Matchday 5 and scored his first goal of the season, which also meant the victory for his club.

Ulises Davila

2 of 5

Ulises Davila made quite an impression while playing for the Mexico U-20 squad.

In 2011 he was El Tri's top scorer in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship and the second-best scorer of the Toulon Tournament. That same year he also played in the U-20 World Cup.

His performances took him to Chelsea, which quickly loaned him to Vitesse, Sabadell and Cordoba. With the latter he scored seven times, including the goal that secured the Whites and Greens a spot in La Liga after 42 years of absence.

Despite his stats (h/t Soccerway), Davila was loaned again, this time to Tenerife, where he has appeared twice and is hoping to become an undisputed starter.

Right now El Tri lack the finishing touch, and Davila's knack for goalscoring could come in handy for Miguel Herrera.

Carlos Fierro

3 of 5

Carlos Fierro caught the attention of the media during the 2013 U-17 World Cup, which Mexico won.

El Guero quickly earned his chance to debut with Guadalajara's first team, but it wasn't until the 2013 Apertura tournament that he started to play on a regular basis.

But Fierro faced another obstacle in his career, as he had to fight for a place on the team with Omar Bravo, Aldo de Nigris, Miguel Sabah and Rafael Marquez Lugo, all of them well-established forwards in the Liga MX.

However, he managed to adjust to a new role on the pitch. He started to appear through the left flank as a winger, securing playing time with Chivas.

In the 2014 Apertura, Fierro has appeared seven times; in four of them he has substituted Aldo de Nigris and Omar Bravo, proving he still has what it takes to play as a forward—he bagged a brace against Leones Negros.

Hirving Lozano

4 of 5

Hirving Lozano has scored four of Pachuca's 10 goals in the 2014 Apertura tournament. He is a natural right-footed player but can very well finish a play with the left leg or the head.

El Chucky is a 19-year-old forward who debuted last season with a goal against America after just five minutes on the pitch.

Lozano takes chances constantly. During the current tournament he has made 15 shots and has created 18 goal opportunities, including one assist, as per Squawka.

His dribbling skills and speed set him as one of the most unbalancing forwards of the Liga MX. He can leave the defenders behind easily, and his first-class ball control allows him to shoot from outside or inside the box.

Dieter Villalpando

5 of 5

Dieter Villalpando is another promising youngster playing for Pachuca. So far, he has appeared 29 times, 21 of them in the starting position.

Villalpando plays in the center of the pitch. His main task is distributing the ball, a task in which he is very successful.

During the 2014 Apertura his average pass accuracy is 89 percent between long passes, crosses and through balls, according to Squawka.

His good performance as central midfielder has brought good results to Los Tuzos. Squawka reports that he has four key passes and two assists to his name.

Villalpando could be a good fit for Miguel Herrera's 5-3-2 system, especially when Jose Juan Vazquez is not available.
