Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 Results: Key Stats and Top Moments from Rematch

Nate LoopSep 15, 2014

Floyd Mayweather (47-0-0) put on a boxing clinic in his victory by unanimous decision over Marcos Maidana (35-5-0) on Saturday night. Twelve rounds can slip by pretty quickly when one is watching Mayweather dazzle his opposition with technical wizardry and excellent footwork.

Maidana opted for an approach that was almost the polar opposite of what he displayed in the first fight. Back in May, the Argentinian boxer rained down power punches on Mayweather, connecting at a low rate but stunning his undefeated opponent with the sheer volume of his offensive front.

In the first round of the rematch, Maidana threw just 16 total punches, per Showtime Stats:

It immediately became clear that Maidana was looking to save his energy and prevent himself from the rapid fade that plagued him in the first contest. Unfortunately, Maidana's tentative approach wasn't the right balance for a fight against Mayweather.

At that early rate, he was essentially forcing himself to go for a late knockout to win this contest. Mayweather's speed and ability to roll with punches was on full display. He didn't throw too many combinations himself, but as Showtime Stats demonstrates, he connected with a good percentage of his power punches over the course of the entire fight:

The first three rounds of the fight continued in a predictable fashion. Maidana scored the first real surprising shot of the night with a hard hook just before the final bell in Round 3.

BoxingScene.com called it the best punch of the fight up to that point:

Mayweather's dominance didn't lead to too many highlight-reel exchanges, but the fourth round saw both fighters put in some extra work with the gloves. Maidana came out firing, spurred on by the hope that the round-ending punch gave him.

It wasn't enough to deter Mayweather, who quickly regrouped and punished his opponent with stinging overhand rights throughout the middle rounds. Mayweather did a fine job of moving toward the center of the ring and staying away from the ropes.

Maidana tried to back him into a corner on numerous occasions, the source of much of his success in the first bout, but Mayweather was ready for this part of his opponent's strategy and sidestepped the advancing pugilist with relative ease.

The only statistic that favored Maidana was the total number of body punches, per Showtime Stats, but that was mostly due to his increased volume:

There was a strange moment in the ninth round. Mayweather quickly pulled back from Maidana and loudly complained to the referee. He claimed after the match that Maidana bit him, via SportsCenter:

Maidana continued to show his growing frustration as the fight wore on, and Mayweather picked up round after round. Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole noted Maidana lost a point in the 10th round for pushing Mayweather to the mat:

Referee Kenny Bayless had to warn Maidana to make it a clean fight at the beginning of the 11th round, per Iole:

Perhaps the extracurricular activities were Maidana's way of searching for an edge, or at least leaving the MGM Grand with some modicum of revenge in a match that had been so thoroughly dominated by Mayweather. His new strategy failed to hurt Mayweather and prevent him from using his full repertoire of tricks and physical gifts.

Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix gave his take on the situation as the fight drew to a conclusion:

The unanimous decision was hardly surprising to most observers. Mayweather outclassed his opponent and deserved his 47th professional victory.

Mayweather will enjoy his reign at the top of the sport. Many observers saw Maidana as his most dangerous opponent due to his high knockout percentage and visually thrilling display from the first contest. Now Mayweather has the opportunity to handpick opponents who will struggle to keep up with his quick reflexes and unlock his defensive tactics.
