Updates from Monday, Nov. 3

Daniel Sturridge has sparked optimism among Liverpool fans over a dramatic return to action at Real Madrid's Bernabeu on Tuesday, posting a picture of himself on the flight to Madrid with the rest of the Reds' squad.

Sturridge is nursing a calf issue and is not expected to pull on the red shirt for another couple of weeks, but he updated his Instagram with the words: "Madrid bound with the boys."

Later, Brendan Rodgers spoke about the chances of Sturridge featuring against Real Madrid, via James Pierce of the Liverpool Echo:

Updates from Friday, Oct. 31

Daniel Sturridge is set to be sidelined for the biggest week of Liverpool's season to date after Brendan Rodgers revealed he will likely miss forthcoming clashes with Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Dominic King of the Daily Mail reports the news, quoting Rodgers saying:

"

I don’t think he will be fit. The bottom line is that he is injured. He strained his calf. So he is injured. We will just wait and work with him until he gets back fit.

[...] We will work with him and hopefully we will get that bit of luck when he comes back. When he comes back, hopefully we will have him for the rest of the season.

[...] All I know is it’s a calf strain on the back of his last injury and he’s working to recover.

"

Sturridge posted a positive update on Friday, but it appears his absence is set to stretch into the international break.

Updates from Thursday, Oct. 30

Daniel Sturridge, as expected, will miss Liverpool's trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers confirmed, via Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:

Sturridge has confessed he fears injury problems will continue to blight his career, claiming his troubles may be hereditary.

Matt Morlidge of the Mail Online quotes Sturridge, who currently has a calf issue, saying to talkSPORT:

"

I play my game as best I can, but I've been unfortunate this season. Maybe it's my body type, maybe it's hereditary.

Both my uncles had injuries, and my dad had them as well. Maybe it's the Caribbean vibes, maybe I have speed but maybe it makes you more vulnerable because of the fast twitch muscles and the speed in which you're moving.

I am vulnerable to muscle injuries. As long as I continue to work hard everything will take care of itself.

"

Updates from Monday, Oct. 27

Daniel Sturridge has been warned by Brendan Rodgers that he will never become one of Europe's great strikers if he can't stay off the treatment table.

Rodgers is quoted saying by Ian Doyle of the Liverpool Echo:

"

He won’t become a top European striker until he plays consistently. It doesn’t matter about potential. You have to play.

When he comes back into the team, you will see the confidence because of the movement and the dynamic.

But he isn’t fit and he hasn’t been for a long time. We just have to work without and while we are doing that, we are staying up and around the top end of the table.

"

Updates from Saturday, Oct. 18

James Pearce of Liverpool Echo has the latest update on Sturridge's status:

"

'Daniel has pulled his calf,' Rodgers told the ECHO.

'He’s looking at being out for another two to four weeks.

'It’s a big blow as we were looking forward to welcoming Daniel back. He has worked tirelessly.

'But we have other players training hard and working hard and we will turn to them. It’s why we bulked up the squad in the summer.'

"

Updates from Friday, Oct. 17

Tony Barrett of the Times of London has an update on Sturridge, and the news isn't good:

LiverpoolFC.com's Chris Shaw has the latest on Sturridge's status:

"

We'll have to see tomorrow how Dan is. We just need to see by tomorrow where he's at and then we'll take it from there.

He has obviously been out for a long time, nearly six weeks. He is working tirelessly with the medical team - I have got an incredible sports science and medical team here.

They really focus in on his rehabilitation. He's a top-class talent and he'll be looking forward to getting back once he's ready.

"

Updates from Thursday, Oct. 9

ESPNFC reported good news on Sturridge ahead of this weekend's international break:

Updates from Friday, Oct. 3

England boss Roy Hodgson has warned Brendan Rodgers he will be watching this weekend to see if Daniel Sturridge features for Liverpool against West Brom.

Hodgson left the injured striker out of his squad for upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers, and he said, per the Daily Mirror's Martin Lipton:

"

Let’s wait and see if he plays this weekend. If he does, that will be a matter for some discussion.

"

Hodgson also refuted the claim that Sturridge received his thigh injury after being forced to train by England. Lipton provides the quotes:

"

I don’t remember that, at all. That’s dangerous that one. We will check that up with other members of staff but I don’t have any memory of Daniel telling me he didn’t want to train.

The interesting thing about the session where Daniel got injured is that he was quite keen to take part in it because he was such an important part of it, and we were trying to develop a new system of play.

"

Updates from Thursday, Oct. 2

Daniel Sturridge, as expected, has been left out of the England squad for forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo confirmed:

England boss Roy Hodgson hinted Sturridge will play no part for Liverpool this weekend against West Brom, as noted by the Guardian's Daniel Taylor:

Brendan Rodgers had earlier revealed a conversation with Hodgson over the fitness of Sturridge.

Rodgers was quoted saying by Sky Sports:

"

I spoke to Roy. I am not sure if Daniel will be fit for the weekend so I think at this moment he won't be in the squad.

I think over the next couple of weeks Daniel has to get up to speed and hopefully after the international break he will be able to play for us, which is the priority.

"

Updates from Wednesday, Oct. 1

Brendan Rodgers insists Daniel Sturridge will play no part in England's upcoming international encounters, regardless of whether he features against West Brom at the weekend.

Rodgers was quoted saying by David Maddock of the Daily Mirror:

"

He won’t be fit to play for England - whether he’s available for the weekend or not.

I don’t think he’s fit to play for England.

We are hoping he can develop over the next 48 hours, to be in a position to train with the team on Thursday, but that would be his first involvement with the team, on Thursday, Friday and have the availability maybe for the squad for Saturday.

But if we are talking about players to be picked for international duty then they need to be fit to play, and Daniel certainly won’t be fit to play.

"

Updates from Tuesday, Sept. 30

Daniel Sturridge will play no part in Liverpool's Champions League clash against Basel, according to the Times' Tony Barrett.

Sturridge had been given a chance by Brendan Rodgers after he missed the Merseyside derby, but Barrett tweeted:

The Daily Star's Jack Wilson also reports Sturridge's ongoing absence:

"

The Kop star striker is not travelling to Switzerland with the rest of Brendan Rodgers' for the clash at St Jakobs Park.

[...] England coach Roy Hodgson names his squad for the Euro 2016 qualifiers with San Marino and Estonia on Thursday and his medical staff are in dialogue with Liverpool over whether Sturridge will feature against West Brom on Saturday.

"

Updates from Monday, Sept. 29

Brendan Rodgers will take a late check on Daniel Sturridge ahead of Liverpool's clash with Basel on Wednesday.

Liverpool's official website provides the latest:

"

We needed to see if he could train on the Friday, but I got the message on the Thursday night that he would struggle, so he wasn't really close to playing (against Everton).

I'll see how he is (for Basel). He wasn't far away for Everton, but he certainly wasn't fit enough to be on the bench.

"

Updates from Sunday, Sept. 28

Joe Bernstein of the Daily Mail reports Daniel Sturridge participated in a training session today:

"

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers gave up his free Sunday to join striker Daniel Sturridge in a training session to test his fitness ahead of this week's key Champions League clash in Basle.

Sturridge, who has missed Liverpool's last five matches after picking up a thigh injury on international duty with England, was put through his paces at the club's Melwood training ground - with Rodgers also taking part in the same routine under the watchful eye of two of the club's coaching staff.

[...]

Although Liverpool haven't yet confirmed whether Sturridge is fit to return on Wednesday night, the forward looked pain-free as he completed the strenuous work-out and Rodgers was all smiles 24 hours after seeing his side held 1-1 by Everton in the Merseyside derby.

"

Updates from Thursday, Sept. 25

Daniel Sturridge is battling to be fit for Saturday's Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton.

Brendan Rodgers provided the following update on Thursday, per James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo:

Updates from Friday, Sept. 19

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Daniel Sturridge could return for Liverpool in the Sept. 27 Merseyside derby against Everton.

Sturridge will definitely miss Saturday's trip to West Ham, but could return the following weekend if he is 100 percent fit. David Maddock of the Daily Mirror quotes Brendan Rodgers saying:

"

We wouldn’t rush him back because of one game. Unless he’s fit enough to produce for us then I wouldn’t rush it.

He does have a chance for the derby, yes. It’s just how the injury has responded and he’s working well but we’ll know more early next week. He’s out on the field and he’ll be back in full training at the beginning of next week.

"

Updates from Thursday, Sept. 18

Liverpool's official Twitter feed has an update on Sturridge's condition:

Updates from Wednesday, Sept. 17

Daniel Sturridge may be back sooner than expected to boost his Liverpool team-mates after he came through a series of exercises on the training ground on Wednesday.

The England striker tweeted:

Adam Shergold of the Daily Mail provides details of Sturridge's workout:

"

The England striker had been expected to miss three weeks after suffering the injury while away on international duty but it seems his comeback could come sooner than expected.

Sturridge looked comfortable jogging, turning and running with the ball as he trained alone on Wednesday morning.

"

Updates from Thursday, Sept. 11

Rodgers gave a potential timeline for Sturridge's injury, according to Liverpool's official Twitter feed:

James Pearce of liverpoolecho.co.uk provides a statement from Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers discussing Daniel Sturridge's injury with talkSPORT:

"

The only disappointment for us was Daniel Sturridge coming back injured as he had started the season very well.

We're obviously disappointed because we feel it was an injury which could have been prevented.

He has worked so hard over pre-season and looked very fit and strong in our last game against Tottenham.

I think clubs work differently at times to international teams.

It's more the recovery strategy.  When we look at our players here we look at them individually in terms of what their needs are.

Fast players would have a second day recovery while other players can work on that day.

When you are that type of quick player like Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling and boys like Danny Welbeck you need to recover them.

"

Updates from Wednesday, Sept. 10

Daniel Sturridge won't be on the pitch anytime soon according to James Pearce of liverpoolecho.co.uk:

"

Scans have revealed that the Liverpool FC striker will be ruled out for two to three weeks due to the thigh injury he suffered on international duty.

Sturridge will miss the Reds’ home Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Saturday as well as next Tuesday’s opening Champions League group match against Ludogorets at Anfield.

The prolific 25-year-old frontman is also doubtful for next weekend’s trip to West Ham and is unlikely to feature against Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup the following Tuesday.

However, Liverpool are hopeful Sturridge will have recovered in time to face Everton at Anfield on Saturday, September 27.

"

Original Text

Daniel Sturridge is a doubt for England's Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on Monday after picking up an injury in training.

Sky Sports confirmed the worst:

John Cross of Mirror also notes that "The FA refused to say which thigh was injured but Liverpool fear he could be out for up to three weeks."

Sturridge took to Twitter for this thoughts as well:

The official England Twitter account confirmed the striker will be assessed by medical staff, although it wasn't sure whether he would miss the clash in Basel:

The news will also be a blow to Liverpool fans, who are hoping Sturridge can improve upon his first full season at Anfield and take on the scoring load following Luis Suarez's summer departure.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City forward has emerged as Roy Hodgson's default option up front in the last year, with WhoScored.com noting his threat on goal this calendar year:

The Three Lions are coming off the back of a 1-0 friendly win over Norway in which they managed just two shots on target, per WhoScored.com, and their lack of impetus in attack won't be helped by a potential Sturridge absence.

Despite the lack of goals in that match, The Guardian's Jamie Jackson nevertheless rated Sturridge and Raheem Sterling as England's top two performers on the night:

Sky News reports that Gary Cahill was absent from Friday's training session as well, but that he is expected to return to practice this weekend and should be available on Monday.

Hodgson has Wayne Rooney, Rickie Lambert and Danny Welbeck as options to replace Sturridge in attack, although talkSPORT reported earlier in the week new Arsenal man Welbeck is also struggling with injury.

If it does prove a short-term scare, Brendan Rodgers will be pleased that it happened during an international break, limiting the impact it might have on club matters.

The Liverpool manager handed Mario Balotelli his Liverpool debut in the 3-0 win over Tottenham, but the Italian would have all the more pressure on his shoulders without Sturridge to guide him up front.
