Ladies and Gentlemen, Yuni Is Gone

As you have probably heard by now, the Mariners traded Yuniesky Betancourt to the Kansas City Royals for minor league pitchers Derrick Saito and Daniel Cortes.

As you probably have figured, I love this trade. The fact we dumped Yuni, who brings absolutely nothing to the table, AND got something back, is just huge in my book.

Daniel Cortes definitely would have a place in the organization. He throws hard (low to mid 90's) but rarely knows where it’s going. I'd say there's a good bet he ends up in one of Zduriencik's future bullpens.

He's having a down year this year, but he's only 22 and has time to fix some command issues. Some say he's a back of the end starter, but I seem him more as a middle reliever due to his control and command issues.

Don't let his size (5'9") fool you, Derrick Saito can gun it. In college he could get his fastball up into the 95-98 range as a reliever. His curveball was supposedly one of the best in the conference, with a sharp late break. Can he start?

I'd say he has a shot, but like Cortes, he needs to iron some things out. However being lefty and throwing 97-98 and coupling that with a sharp breaking ball, he's late game death to lefties. From what I know, he sounds like a smaller, harder throwing George Sherrill.

One thing I've always wanted to know. KC fans, why is your organization so attached to Yuni? I could understand when he was a good fielder with a promising bat, but now he's a deteriorating lazy punk. I don't get it.

Another thing for Mariners fans, these aren't very likely to turn into the Bavasi accusations of Travis Chick and Jesse Foppert. These pitchers can actually throw the ball over 88 and aren't coming off Tommy John Surgery.

Just another move that makes me sit back a say "Yep, our GM is awesome."

One last thing, Franklin Gutierrez, you are now officially my idol. I hope you get what you deserve next year and get voted into an All-Star Game. You deserve it man.
