Cedric Benson: You're Free to Go...Away

How idiotic can one guy be?  I honestly do not understand.  I am frustrated by Cedric Benson in a Chicago Bears uniform, sure.  However what he did this past weekend is simply inexcusable. 

If a police officer tells you to do something, you do it.  You learn this sometime just after you learn to walk.  Apparently Cedric Benson did not get this memo.

As you have likely heard by now, Cedric Benson was taken into custody on Sunday after operating his boat while under the influence of alcohol.  Benson became uncooperative after he was pulled over, this according to initial reports.  After becoming enraged, police had to use pepper spray on the Bears former first round draft pick in 2005.

Benson said earlier today that he was not under the influence while he was operating his boat.  Great, Cedric.  Then why did you refuse to take a sobriety test?  If you have nothing to hide, why hide it?  This is a logic in which I do not understand.  Maybe if the police were insisting on entering your home without an actual search warrant, sure, that's one thing.  Taking a sobriety test is an entire other.

If you had nothing to hide Cedric, why did you insist on trying to hide it so badly?  You make the police seem justified in their actions, simply by your actions alone.  

I am also yet to hear any of Cedric's posse to defend him in public.  Until one of them possibly comes forward I am unable to change my beliefs that hes guilty as charged.

Is this means to dump Cedric if you are the Bears?  It's not the same thing that Tank Johnson, PacMan Jones, or Chris Henry did.  Not by any stretch of the imagination.  Is it wrong to do and did he put himself in jeopardy of injury?  Yes.  But he was not in possession of massive weapons, nor did he cause anyone to be fatally shot.

Cedric Benson has however earned the right to not see the football field in a Chicago Bears uniform ever again.  He's been injury prone as a Bear, something he never was in college.  Many will defend him in this case but listening to various media reports, it seems that Benson does not like to put in the time during the off-season, much of the reason injuries occur.

It has seemed to me that Cedric Benson thinks that rules in the NFL do not apply to him.  What has he done to possibly refute this claim?  Shows up late to camp his rookie season and has basically chased Thomas Jones from town thanks to their locker room disputes. 

I am fed up with Cedric Benson as a Bear.  He is never going to do anything to justify the Bears picking him fourth overall and its not like the Bears don't know that, seeing they drafted Matt Forte with their second pick in last weekends draft.

In all honesty I would be shocked if Cedric Benson plays a down for the Bears ever again.  I already was feeling that way because I have doubts that he would be willing to rehab hard enough to play this season.  Some people bounce back from adversity very well, others only get buried when it comes around.  I feel Cedric Benson has shown he is of the latter and that any hope Bears fans had for him to emerge have been erased in the last two weeks.

My final thought has nothing to do with football.  Just in life, why do you bother to even put yourself in these situations?  Obviously there was cause for the police to pull Benson's boat over.  Why do something that stupid?  Why do people drink and drive, why do they drink and boat?  It makes no sense to me.  I'm willing to at least let the justice system run its course, but with the evidence so far I have trouble seeing where things will turn out any different.
