Pro Wrestling: A Quick Look at How Much It Is Supported and Watched

Matthew HesterSenior Writer IJanuary 1, 2017

Hello everyone. As always, I would like to thank you for spending some time with me today.

The other day I was bored at work and I decided to do something new. Instead of rambling on about a wrestler or the problems with this or that, I thought to myself how many people really watch wrestling.

I am not talking about people like you or me; I am talking about in general. While watching raw I was given an idea on how to get a general idea. What I decided to do was run a poll at work.

Now I realize this represents a small part of the United States. It's no more accurate than most polls. Still it was interesting to see how other people besides wrestling fans felt about our beloved past time.

I mailed everyone at work with a list of questions that would help give me an idea. The results were interesting to say the least. Out of the 500 people in my department a little more than half responded.

Here is the list of question that I sent out.

How often do you watch pro wrestling?

Whenever it is on

Sometimes when I'm bored

Only when my kids have it on

Not at all

How do you feel about Pro Wrestlers?

I respect them a lot

I respect them as athletes but it's fake

I don't care one way or another

I despise pro wrestling

Can you name more then one pro wrestler?

I can name past and current wrestlers

I can name a few of them

I remember just the big names

I don't know any at all

Do you ever go to watch your local Indy wrestling shows?

I go as often as I can

Sometimes when I'm in the mood

I will take the kids sometimes

I didn't know there was Indy wrestling

Would you support you kid if he or she wanted to be a pro wrestler?

I would support him 100%

I would support him or her but try to pursued them to do something else

No not at all; it would be a waste of my kid's life

Those were the five questions that I sent out. Like I said before, I know this a fraction of the population, but it does give you a glimpse on how people feel about pro wrestling.

Also please note when I had them vote I had them check of all the ones that apply.

I will now give all of you the answers to the five questions. I found them to be informative and enlightening. I hope you enjoy them as well.

How often do you watch pro wrestling?

Less than 14 percent said they watch it whenever it's on TV. A little more than 17 percent said they watch it sometimes. Over 20 percent said they watch it when the kids do. The rest fell into the "not at all" group.

I know the numbers sound low, but if you think about it that is high considering it's out of 256 people.

How do you feel about Pro wrestlers?

Over 15 percent said they respect pro wrestlers a lot. A whopping 22 percent said they respect them but it's fake. The rest fell into the last two categories.

I was surprised that 22 percent had that much respect for wrestlers. It is deserved and all I just didn't think it would be that high.

Can you name more than one pro wrestler?

This I felt was the most encouraging of the questions. Over 20 percent said they can name past and present wrestlers. Over 24 percent said they can name a few of them. A whopping 43 percent said they can name the big named wrestlers.

The rest said that they couldn't name any wrestlers.

Do you ever go to watch your local Indy wrestling shows?

Only a little more than 9% said they go as often as they can. A little more than 10% said they either go when they are in the mood or take their kids. The rest said they didn't even know about Indy wrestling.

I found this to be a little disturbing. You would like to see more support shown for the Indy scene. It is after all the Indy scene that is the heart of pro wrestling.

Would you support you kid if he or she wanted to be a pro wrestler?

Less than 7 percent said they would support their child 100 percent . Only 9 percent said they would support them but try to pursue them in other directions. They rest said not at all.

I also found this to be disturbingly low numbers. I understand why they would be low. It is very hard to be a wrestler. Let's face it, though, all the big names have to start at the bottom though.

I hope you enjoyed this read; it is my first time doing something like this. Depending on how well this goes you might see more.

As always, have a great day and god bless.
