And soccer—let's not forget about the soccer, which is the basis for Budweiser's new, uber-patriotic World Cup commercial.
The ramp-up to the match between the U.S. men's national soccer team and Belgium is reaching peak levels, and Anheuser-Busch has pulled out all remaining stops to pump up American consumers with its "#AreYouReady" campaign.
Featuring fireworks, motorcycles and the company's trademark fleet of giant horses, the ad is a nonsensical montage of things Americans ostensibly like.
Bikini-clad woman on a surfboard? Throw it in there! Fireman chopping wood? You know it! Horses backed by fighter jets? They're coming for you, Belgium! Rock, flag and eaaagle!
This ad had me pumped me to the point where for one shining red-white-and-blue minute, I forgot that InBev—the company that bought Anheuser-Busch in 2008—is based in Belgium.
Yep, it's a bit of a buzzkill realizing your adrenaline gland just pumped out four quarts of American pride over a commercial ultimately benefiting our Belgian overlords. I would even hazard to guess that Budweiser went over the top specifically to make sure they weren't branded as being in Belgium's corner.
Regardless, if you can block out the InBev aspect and focus on the action at hand, this commercial is right up there with Hulk Hogan's pre-Germany speech in the ranks of USMNT hype videos.
If there's one thing the U.S. has going for it in this World Cup, it's overstated, nationalistic rhetoric bordering on insanity. Block out the reality and win, baby! Oh yeah!
