India Vs West Indies 1st ODI at Sabina Park: Preview

Vishrut AggarwalCorrespondent IJune 26, 2009

India are going to play their 1st ODI against West Indies today at Sabina Park. Let us take a look at the probabilities.

Ground Stats

India does not has a good at Sabina Park. It has played four matches there, two of which have been abandoned, one of them India won (it was a narrow escape) and one India lost bu just 1 run.

On the other hand West Indies, has played 24 matches on this ground and won 15 out of them.

Sabina Park is a ground which is famous for wickets. Bowlers can have a go here. Making huge scores on this ground is very difficult. The highest total on this ground is 349 made by Pakistan against Zimbabwe in 2007. This is the only 300+ score on this ground.

So the key is to just win the toss, and bowl first. Then you just have to get the opposition out quickly and reach you target as soon as possible.

I am expecting a lot of wickets.

Indian Stats

As I have stated above, this is a ground of wickets. So the Indian bowlers have a good chance of putting up a good show here.

Ishant Sharma has been in good form in the T20 World Cup and can really get crucial wickets here.

Harbhajan Singh also has been in good form and can also show his magic here. Harbhajan's best bowling spell in Tests some time back was achieved on this ground only. So he is a key player for India.

Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma had a good time in the T20 World Cup. even Yuvraj Singh was among the sixes in the tournament. So the batting lineup is also good.

The main problem India is facing is that it has no Tendulkar and Sehwag. India needs those two players, because they are the real aggressive smashers(especially Sehwag) and without them the batting lineup is not the same as it was against England and New Zealand.

The new players Abhishek Nayyar and Murli Vijay Krishna are the players to watch out for. They are good Ranji players and can show some magic here as well.

India are going to play their 1st ODI against West Indies today at Sabina Park. Let us take a look at the probabilities.

West Indian Stats

West Indian key bowlers Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle have been quite successful on this ground. This is also Gayle's home ground and he would like to put up a good show here.

Chris Gayle has been in good form in the T20 World Cup and, as we all know he is a good smasher. So he can just flatten the bowling attack easily. Dwayne Bravo also really flattened the Indian bowling attack in the T20 World Cup and he can do it here as well.

Other players to watch out for are Shivnarine Chandrapaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Denesh Ramdin, Runako Morton etc.

But the greatest weakness in the West Indian team is the absence of Brian Lara. This legendary player has retired from cricket and West Indies are playing a series against India for the first time after his retirement. The lack of good captaincy still haunts the Windies. So they have to work hard to defeat India.

India have done well under captain M.S Dhoni and coach Gary Kirsten. So they will be looking for a cleansweep to get on rank 2 in the ICC ODI rankings. This is not going to be difficult for them because the just defeated Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand in a bilateral series and are looking to do the same here.

So, best of uck to both India and West Indies.
