This should come as little surprise, but the UFC has announced that "Notorious" Conor McGregor will face off with Cole Miller in the main event of the promotion's upcoming UFC Fight Night 46 event in Dublin, Ireland. McGregor and Miller have been exchanging pointed words for a long while now, and rumors of the matchup have been swirling for weeks.
That's right! Conor McGregor vs. Cole Miller official for UFC Fight Night Dublin on July 19. Main event.— Heidi Fang (@HeidiFang) April 30, 2014
McGregor entered the UFC to much fanfare last year, and made good on the hype with a devastating first-round knockout of Marcus Brimage at UFC on Fuel TV 9. He followed that up with another big win over Max Holloway at UFC Fight Night 26 in August, taking a handy decision win in front of a raucous Boston crowd. While McGregor won the fight with ease, he left the cage with a torn ACL that has kept him shelved ever since.
Miller has been a preliminary card staple for the UFC since The Ultimate Fighter 5. He accrued a respectable 7-3 record as a lightweight, but returned to his native featherweight division in 2012. While he started his run at featherweight inauspiciously, going 1-3 in his first four fights, he has since gained popularity as a "heel," and taken back-to-back wins over Andy Ogle and Sam Sicilia.
In October, Miller followed his win over Ogle with an infamous post-fight speech where he slammed MMA judging, various European UFC featherweights and walked off by calling Conor McGregor "Colin McGoober."
While the insult drew little more than chuckles, it set him up for this headliner.
UFC Fight Night 46 (also called UFC: Dublin for short) goes down on July 19. In addition to McGregor vs. Miller, the event is co-headlined by a welterweight tilt between Gunnar Nelson and Ryan LaFlare, and also features Ian McCall vs. Brad Pickett and Tom Lawlor's return opposite Ilir Latifi.
