How Profecional Boxing Is Scored In Differense To The Amateurs

norman villanuevaJun 18, 2009

It seems that lot of us boxing fans have always taught that boxing is scored by who lands the most punches in a fight. Unfortunately for a lot of people that's not the way it works. In the amateurs boxing is scored by counting the punches the whole fight each round combine, a knockdown only counts as a punch and does not give u any kind of advantage, same is with the standing 8 count.

In pro boxing things are a lot different fights are scored round by round, 10 points if u win a round, 9 if u lose a round, a point less if u get knockdown, or loosing a pint for fault. A whole lot of people do not understand this rules, that's just how boxing works in the pros.

A great example for this is the fight last Saturday between two of the best welterweights in the world, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey. two men who left it all in the ring that night. it was a very very close fight, where one of the fighters( Miguel Cotto)had nasty gash in his left eye caused by an accidental clash of heads at the end of round 3.

Cotto who had already won rounds 1 and 3(the first being a 10-8 round for cotto) went on to win rounds 4 and 6. Thats 4 rounds for cotto but because of the knockdown in round 1 all cotto needed was 1 round to get a draw 2 rounds to win. cotto went on to fight loosing rounds 7,8, and 9, a questionable round ten, and securing rounds eleven and twelve.

These would mean that the fight would've been a draw, if it wasnt for the knockdown in roud 1. So cotto would win the fight 114-113 for cotto, one of the judges had the fight scored 116-111, most people thought that was bad judging but remember rounds 2 and 10 were very close that judge gave those rounds to cotto so that score is not out of the question. The same happened with the score 115-112, then again that judge favored cotto in eather rounds 2 or 10.

In my eyes cotto won the fight escaping a draw by a narrow point because of the knockdown but rounds 2 and 10 couldve gone eather way. Boxing is a very tricky sport that can play with your mind, thats why it is such a great sport and my favorite. Is the best when fighters overcome adversity and go on to win.
