World Football, EPL, Arsenal, Liverpool, Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, English Premier League

Last night saw the annual British PFA awards, a ceremony where the winners are nominated by their fellow professionals. On top of Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year, there is also a Premiership Team of the Year. The winners were as follows:

Player of the Year:

Cristiano Ronaldo

(nominated: Torres, Gerrard, Adebayor, James)

Young Player of the Year:

Cesc Fabregas

(nominated: Torres, Micah Richards, A. Young, Agbonlahor)

Team of the Year:

David James (Portsmouth),

Bacary Sagna (Arsenal), Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd), Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd), Gael Clichy (Arsenal)

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd), Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal), Fernando Torres (Liverpool)

For me, the player of the year has to go to Ronaldo, but I would award young player of the year to Torres purely for his first season impact and incredible scoring rate.

As far as I can see, the team seems to be pretty much bang on. I'm sure some Man Utd fans would argue that Evra deserves a spot, but I think Clichy's consistency just edges it.

It's also very hard to argue with the four midfielders or the strikers, all of which I believe deserve their place in the team of the year.

Incidentally, Cristiano Ronaldo voted for Emmanuel Adebayor, showing just how much respect he has for the Togolese striker.

What do you think? Who is in your team of the year? Please comment below.

  1. I think Ashley Young deserved the Young player of the year award. Fabregas faded away after the first 10 games....
Other than that, the team seems spot on.

While I acknowledge no Chelsea player merited a spot in the team, I'm quite disappointed nonetheless. Just goes to show how poorly we've performed throughout the season, despite the fact that we're on the brink of an amazing achievement......

    1. Interesting observation Salomon - to be honest I hadn't even noticed that! Funny that you're still in with a massive shout of winning the league but no-one's really stood out.

Who would you give Chelsea player of the season to?

    2. Either Joe Cole or Salomon Kalou...

Joe Cole would probably edge it for me though.......

  2. Ì dont think Fabregas should have got young player of the season, i would give it to Torres. He has been phenomenal and unlike Fabregas, has kept it up all season!

    1. I'm with you Keith. Same question to number 2: Who's your Man Utd player of the year?

  3. Although Ronaldo stole all the plaudits for me its Ferdinhand. I know a lot of credit has to go to Vidic because without him the defence is a lot weaker, but I think this is the best season Rio has ever played. He was consistent(consistency being a huge problem in recent years) and played to the same high quality level whether it was Derby or Barcelona. At least he made the team of the season along with Vidic!

A pity not to see Evra there, but Clichy does deserve it.
Im just hoping now Ronaldo gets World Player of the Year.

  4. Ronaldo did not show up..It was quite peculiar..
