Tottenham Completes £15.8 Million Record Transfer For Luka Modric
One of Europe's hottest commodities in the upcoming transfer window is officially off the window, following Luka Modric's shocking £15.8 million move to White Hart Lane, a transfer record for the London club.
Tottenham have beaten out Premier League rivals Newcastle United, Chelsea and Manchester City for Modric's signature in a bid to bolster a squad with European ambitions next season.
Tottenham and Modric's agent appear to have come to an agreement on a five-year contract, but the former Dinamo Zagreb superstar will need to undergo a medical and obtain a work permit.
The 22-year-old Croatian international is one of the most highly-rated players coming out of Europe. He was in attendance as he watched his new club take on Bolton in Saturday afternoon's English Premier League fixture.
'I'm happy to be joining such a big club,' said Juande Ramos' latest signing.
'It will be a real pleasure to play in the [Premier League], which is the best in Europe, with three English clubs in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Modric was instrumental in his country's 3-2 win over England at the new Wembley, a victory that sent Steve McClaren's side out of the 2008 European Championships.
Bringing along with him his superb passing ability and vision, Modric should provide Ramos with flexibility as he can play in the central midfield or down the left hand side.
The recent addition could potential spell the end or cut into the playing time of Steed Malbranque, Didier Zokora, Aaron Lennon, and Jermaine Jenas.
Paul Robinson and Radek Cerny's futures at Tottenham could be up in the air considering the reported interest Ramos has in Espanyol's Carlos Kameni. The Cameroon international has had his run-ins with racial scrutiny in Spain and could welcome a change of scenery in England.
