Let's Hope History Doesn't Repeat Itself

Coach Bear Bryant of the Alabama Crimson Tide watches his players during a game.

I was doing my usual weekend web surfing, looking around for random Auburn recruiting tidbits, Alabama textbook scandal tidbits, etc.  While doing so, I came across the "Dr. Saturday" blog that had a link to something I thought was very interesting.  It was a youtube video of the "Bear Bryant Show" in 1973.

Now for me, watching classic football and old coaches' shows is actually quite enjoyable.  However, this one was strangely familiar and Bear's comments seemed almost more modern than they should have.  Here's the rundown for those whose memory might have failed them.

1) The year before in 1972, Auburn was 10-1 and the game was the "Punt Bama Punt" game where Auburn returned two blocked punts to come back from a 16-0 deficit in the Fourth Quarter and won 17-16.

2) The next year, 1973, Auburn was 6-6 and Alabama beat Auburn 35 - 0.

Starting to sound familiar?  That's not even the eerie part.

During the intro of the show, Bear comments how Auburn fought a tough game and how he really considers Shug Jordan a great friend.  Then, at about the 2:45 mark, Bear makes this remark, "For a team to change it's offense in the middle of the year and do as well as they did to, they had to have some kind of coaching, because that's very difficult to do."

What?

Did anyone else remember this?  Holy 2008 Auburn offense and 2008 Iron Bowl, Batman.

I thought this was very interesting and to me, paralleled the past two seasons for Auburn.  I just hope that it doesn't start a Bama 9 win streak like the 1973 game did.
