Brad Childress Denies Reports of Brett Favre Deadline

Andy SmithJun 10, 2009

The Brett Favre mania continued this week with more speculation and close sources.

ESPN football analysts Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder reported Monday that sources close to Favre said the three-time MVP quarterback underwent surgery in mid-May by Dr. James Andrews to try to repair a torn tendon in his throwing arm.

His injury is a crucial issue that may decide whether or not Favre comes out of his second retirement to quarterback the Minnesota Vikings in 2009.

ESPN then reported Tuesday that Brad Childress and the Minnesota Vikings gave a deadline to Favre of the end of this week (Friday) to decide if he would come out of his second retirement and play for the Vikings.

However, the head coach of the Vikings tried to clear the air on Wednesday when he appeared on local radio station KFAN.

In his phone call to the KFAN Power Trip Morning show, Childress answered the question of whether or not the Vikings gave Brett Favre a deadline.

His response: "Absolutely not! Unless it came from Deanna (Favre's wife) or somebody like that. But certainly not from me. Not even close. Don't know where that would have dropped out of the sky from."

The Minnesota Vikings thus far have not given any such deadline to Favre, focusing its attention on the team's OTAs and the players that are on the roster.

The Favre speculation is far from over though, as things will heat up with the team's upcoming training camps in late July.
