The Boston Celtics are one of the most storied franchises in the history of sports. Their green and white uniforms can be recognized by almost anyone, from any generation.
In 2005, the "new era" Celtics decided they needed to modernize their jerseys a little bit when they decided to introduce an alternate away jersey. It was a darker shade of green with black numbers. It also brought back the vintage look of having "Boston" across the chest, instead of "Celtics."
Now, there is talk that the Celtics might introduce an alternate home jersey, as well. The current day Celtics are blended with new age players, a new look, and a new style of play.
This leads people to believe that the Celtics should hop on the NBA bandwagon and "modernize" the team by introducing new uniforms all together.
When I picture the Kelly Green and Celtic White (Yes, I made the second color up) uniforms, I think of tradition and success.
The Celtics have the title of holding the most NBA championships of any team. This uniform, although slightly altered over time, has been around since day one. It has covered the shoulders and soaked up the blood and sweat of NBA legends such as Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Kevin McHale, Tom Heinsohn, John Havlicek, and Larry Bird.
I am a firm believer of the saying, "If it aint broke, don't fix it."
Other great franchises such as the Chicago Bulls, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Chicago Bears, and the New York Yankees will probably never change their uniforms.
These are the greatest franchises in the history of sports. And when a current player puts that uniform on, they feel a sense of pride. Like they need to prove they are worthy enough to sport the historic uniform.
It's the Boston Celtics.
If you change the uniforms, you are in a way, moving on from the past. Moving into the future with a new look and feel. The Boston Celtics don't need a new look and feel. They are doing fine with the historic look and feel.
For the past 60 years, the Boston Celtics have created a reputation for success. By wearing these uniforms, they are also honoring the ones who have succeeded before them.
I will be very disappointed if the Celtics ever decided to change their uniforms to make them look more modern.
It will forever change the legacy and tradition that comes along with the "Kelly Green" and "Celtic White."
