A familiar feeling is set to arise at Old Trafford with Wayne Rooney reportedly waiting for certain criteria to be met before penning a new Manchester United contract.

According to the Daily Mail's Chris Wheeler, Rooney remains uncertain over his situation at the club and is waiting to see where David Moyes' side finish come the end of this campaign, as well as what players are recruited.

Wheeler writes:

It is understood Rooney would prefer to put off any decision until after the World Cup before committing to what will almost certainly be the last major deal of his career.

He wants to see where United finish and what new signings they have lined up after a frustrating transfer window last summer when the club’s lack of pulling power was exposed by a failure to land a series of top targets.

Rooney has just entered the final 18 months of his current contract as a United player, and will soon initiate the inevitable panic that so often erupts as a result of a superstar heading into their final year.

FourFourTwo's Jonathan Fadugba recently summarised the string of events that is likely to lead to yet another saga involving England's star forward:

It was back in 2010 that Rooney was last so closely linked with a departure from the club, BBC Sport reporting on the five-year extension—complete with a £250,000-a-week pay upgrade—that was eventually signed.

How would Rooney's final years be better served?

Rooney also enjoyed a summer flirtation with Chelsea at the start of this campaign, but ultimately opted to stay after two bids were rejected, per ESPN FC.

United are currently seventh in the Premier League table and have endured their worst start to a season for 24 years, dating back to the first few steps of Sir Alex Ferguson as the club's boss.

However, any success that the reigning title holders have been involved in this season has seen Rooney at its core.

Per Transfermarkt.co.uk, the 28-year-old has scored 11 goals and made 19 assists across all competitions this term in just 21 starts. That's equal to having a direct hand in almost 1.5 goals per game.

According to the club's official website, Rooney has made 426 appearances and scored more than 200 goals for the Red Devils since arriving in 2004, growing to become an increasingly integral part of the Old Trafford make-up.

However, both parties now enter a phase of the star's career that they've been through before; the only hope for United being that the end result is the same as in the past.

Key to Rooney's future will likely be Moyes' actions in the transfer market. A show of intent and ambition from the club during this time of struggle would undoubtedly ease any fears Rooney might be having over his long-term prospects.
