LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THIS NEXT CONTEST IS SCHEDULED FOR ONE-FALL! WITH A TWENTY MINUTE TIME LIMIT. I WEIGH IN TONIGHT AT 246 POUNDS. I HAIL FROM GREEN BAY WISCONSIN-UH. MRRRRRRRRRRR KENNEDDYYY..........KENNEDY!
As soon as those words were shouted through the old-school MSG-style microphone, the WWE fans knew they were looking at the future of the business.
I personally had only been watching wrestling for a few weeks but I was captivated by this brash, cocky S.O.B who acted like he ran Smackdown.
Why was it that I liked him so much? Was it is loudmouth style (that I myself mirror in real life) or his blonde-flipped up hair (no homo). Or maybe the fact that he reminded me of...well me.
I had found my wrestling idol. Unfortunately I had little to cheer for in the short, but somewhat sweet tenure of Mr. Ken Kennedy (Anderson) in World Wrestling Entertainment.
I watched him win the United States Championship, and then what I thought would be the stepping stone in his skyrocketing career: Money in the Bank, at the first Wrestlemania I ever bought.
However, that would be Kennedy's last big victory as he never seemed to get a break after being injured and initially told to be sidelined for months.
As a result, he dropped the briefcase to Edge and watched his World Title shot disappear into thin air. After his return things kept going downhill as he was set-up for another push as the illegitimate son of Mr.McMahon.
But his luck would run out again as he was suspended along with 10 other WWE Superstars for a big steroid bust in the fall of 2007.
When he returned he spent the next few months scratching and clawing his way to the top. After Wrestlemania he left to film Behind Enemy Lines and finally returned to confront King Regal.
And when he returned, he returned as a fan-favorite and was on a roll in the spring of 2008, even firing the abusive King/General Manager and climbing his way to the top of Raw.
He was then traded to Smackdown in the Draft (a blessing in disguise as he could build his character without being pushed down by the big boys) but eventually got stale and sure enough was injured in a match in August of last year.
His fate was pretty much sealed after that, and with the exception of his movie was fading more and more into obscurity as his die-hard fans hoped he would make one more comeback and prove everyone wrong(me included).
On Monday night we got that chance as Ken returned to Raw and made it clear he would be in the World title hunt in the next coming months.......only to be released days later.
This is a huge blow not only to the creative side of WWE (his unique character), but their mainstream as well, as his gimmick has crossed over into the mainstream, even announcing goals for the Pittsburgh Penguins' Tyler Kennedy.
Now I can only hope that he goes to TNA, or someday returns to WWE so that I may hear my idol scream those famous words back into the microphone that he made famous......famous.
