Turkish Grand Prix: Ferrari, Fernando Alonso Narrow the Gap

Francois GendronAug 26, 2007

The Istanbul circuit proved a formidable equalizer as Ferrari dominated the Turkish Grand Prix from start to finish.

Felipe Massa won his third race of the season, while teammate Kimi Raikkonen finished in second place.

The pivotal moment came with 16 laps to go, when Lewis Hamilton's front right tire exploded as he was driving in third place. The extra pit stop cost Hamilton two spots on the track, but he did manage avoid total catastrophe.

Fernando Alonso took advantage of Hamilton's tire misadventure, managing to finish third after a poor start. Alonso is now only five points back of Hamilton in the race for the Drivers' Championship.

Ferrari, meanwhile, closed the gap to only 11 points in its race for the constructors' title with McLaren-Mercedes. With five races to go to the 2007 season, it is anybody's championship.

We haven't seen such excitement in years.

Next stop: Monza, Italy.
