Kevin Magnussen Confirmed as McLaren Driver for 2014 Formula 1 Season
McLaren has confirmed Kevin Magnussen as Sergio Perezโs replacement for the 2014 Formula 1 season, which will see the rookie join Jenson Button in the senior ranks of the British team.
As reported by the companyโs official website, the 21-year-old driver is set to embark on his first F1 season after being promoted from McLarenโs Young Driver Programme:
"McLaren is pleased to announce that Kevin Magnussen will join Jenson Button as a McLaren Formula 1 race driver for 2014 โ Jensonโs fifth year and Kevinโs first year as McLaren Formula 1 race drivers.
"
Such an announcement has long been expected.
McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh recently suggested "lots" of drivers were being lined up when questioned about Magnussen, reported on the official F1 website.
As noted in previous reports by Sky Sports and Andrew Benson of BBC Sport, the Daneโs signing of a professional contract has been expected for a while now, especially after the talented rookie captured victory in the Formula Renault 3.5 feeder championship this year.
Gary Meenaghan of Abu Dhabiโs The National suggested the announcement is as surprising as Sebastian Vettel sitting atop the podium after yet another Grand Prix victory:
Magnussen praised teammate Button in light of the news, citing him as the "ideal" partner for his first season. He also spoke of his delight at finally joining the teamโs senior ranks, as noted in McLarenโs official report:
"Iโm absolutely overjoyed to be making my Formula 1 debut with McLaren.
Iโll put it simply: this team is the best. It's been my dream to drive for McLaren ever since I was a small kid, and it's no exaggeration to say that I've dedicated almost every day of my life to achieving the goal of becoming a McLaren Formula 1 driver.
"
Kevin is the son of former McLaren driver Jan Magnussen, who captured four titles at Le Mans, per Sky Sportsโ report.
He has been consistently dominant during various youth championships, including 11 victories in 15 races during the Danish Formula Ford season in 2008.
One year after this, he finished second overall in the Formula Renault 2.0 standings and caught the eye of McLaren, who immediately snapped the starlet up for a successful stint in Formula 3.
Magnussen set the pace during Nov. 2012โs Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi, per Sky Sports, and clinched the Formula 3.5 title shortly afterwards.
He went on to set the fastest pace during Silverstoneโs Young Driver Test in July, reported by Sam Tremayne and Matt Beer of AutoSport.
McLaren's new driver is brimming with potential and can make a real impact if he works hard to match Button's pace.
The team must manage its expectations and give Magnussen time to develop without putting too much pressure on him too soon.
Perhaps, one day, he will topple Vettel's prolonged stint at the top.
