How Did the 1994 San Francisco 49ers Only Win One Superbowl?

In sports, you never want to take a championship win for granted. But one can't help but wonder how the collection of talent present on the San Francisco 49ers 1994 Superbowl team did not make it to at least one more Superbowl and complement the 1980's 'Niner dynasty with a 1990's dynasty.

I know the 1990's will always be known as the Dallas decade, but the amount of talent found on the 1994 team is incredible: Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, Ricky Waters, Brent Jones, Merton Hanks, Dana Stubblefield, and Tim Mcdonald all made the pro bowl that year. On top of that, the team featured extremely good role players such as Bryant Young, Garry Plumer, Ken Norton, and perhaps one of the most underrated receivers of all time, John Taylor.

The team cruised through the 1994 playoffs and set Superbowl records for touchdown passes and receptions. It seemed as if nothing would stop this team for several years to come, and players were already thinking of a repeat at the end of the Superbowl victory.

The team remained largely intact through the 1998 season. They reached the playoffs in each of these seasons but lost in either the divisional or conference championship rounds.

If the team had made it to the superbowl in any of those subsequent seasons, it is really anyone's guess how many they could have won against inferior AFC opponents.

The 1994-1998 teams were pure joy to watch. It's almost hard to believe that the current 2009 team should even be allowed to be called the 49ers. Maybe San Francisco 49ers Lite works better.

Can a team that wins the Superbowl possibly underachieve? I will always remember the 1994 49ers because they spoiled me. They set an unfair precedent and standard to follow. Growing up in the 1990's, it was a question of how deep San Francisco was going in the playoffs, not if they were going to make it.

I wish I could say the same today, but at least now I can say with utmost confidence that a loss in the playoffs would not be underachieving and a playoff victory would make me almost as happy as the 1994 Superbowl win. But this time I won't let myself get spoiled.
