Despite a major hole on the Dallas Cowboys, many believe the team maybe one of the best in football. This hole could easily become a major issue early in the season, or it could drive the team to a Super Bowl Championship.

It really comes down to an all or nothing scenario when talking about the playoffs.

The biggest hole on the Cowboys is at the wide receiver position. Terrell Owens made the receiving core one of the best in football. But for better or worse, he is gone now.

Owens made the team better because he drew the double teams and made other receivers open. Owens also brought enough baggage to make the team worse in chemistry.

The Cowboys made the better move by releasing him, but they might have forgotten to find an adequate replacement. Roy Williams has potential to be among the best, but didn’t show it last year.

Williams needs to be a huge part of the Cowboy offense in order for the Cowboys to do well. The team needs a guy who defenses have to focus on, and Williams is the closest thing the Cowboys have.

If Williams can’t be that guy then the rest of the receivers will be covered constantly, and the running game won’t get going. Defenses can play the pass and rush, and they won’t have to worry about giving up big yards.

The Cowboys may find their offense failing to go down the field.

Jason Witten is essentially a wide receiver at the tight end position, and he is among the best at his position. Unfortunately, Witten will not always be down field since he has to block for protection purposes.

After Williams and Witten, the team has a mixture of average wide receivers that can dazzle on any given Sunday.

Patrick Crayton will be the number two receiver by definition. Crayton is actually a pretty good receiver who can be a factor at times, but he isn’t going to be a player defenses worry about.

Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, and Isaiah are the other mediocre receivers on the team. Austin showed up on the box scores here and there, but he never had more than three receptions per game. Hurd was hurt last year and has been a good backup early in his career.

Stanback might be the player to watch among those three, but only if he can stay healthy.

Rookie Manuel Johnson looks intriguing, after being a big factor in the Oklahoma offense. With that being said, he will probably pan out as a backup and role player.

One thing is for sure about the Cowboy offense. The Cowboys are banking on Williams to carry the team with average receivers behind him. If Williams fails, then the Cowboys fail.
