A New Era Is Upon Us: Lyoto Machida Claims Light Heavyweight Belt
"Welcome to the Machida Era."
Joe Rogan made this statement just moments after the previously unbeaten Rashad Evans was brutally beaten by Lyoto Machida.
Machida and Evans remained fairly inactive for the early part of the first round. However, several kicks and flurries were enough to secure that round for Machida.
Round 2 was more of the same, until Machida caught Evans with a hard right hand, dazing the light heavyweight champion. Machida followed that with a flurry of punches, which the announcers related to Liddell's onslaught on Ortiz.
The flurry was violent, nearly everyone landing. Evans displayed his heart, trying to carry on in defense. Trying to regain any sort of composure. One last punch ended any chance of that as "Sugar" Rashad Evans hit the floor.
The fight left us all wondering who could beat Lyoto Machida. Thus far in his career, "The Dragon" has simply made an example of every opponent he has ever had. Can anyone defeat this man?
Machida has yet to lose a round in the UFC. He is simply a ridiculous specimen. As I sit here and ponder who could possibly beat this man, I am dumbfounded. At this point, Machida may be unbeatable.
Everyone says that an MMA fight can go anyway. There are no guarantees. However, Machida may be the exception to that rule.
Machida made absolutely zero mistakes in this bout. If he did, they were so minor that even Rashad Evans was unable to take advantage of it. Machida's defense was simply amazing. Everything from head movement to body control was absolutely phenomenal.
On the offensive end, Machida was also in total control. He had great kicks and great strikes, and his flurry at the end was absolutely insane. Machida may be the most efficient fighter ever to grace to octagon.
Looking at this fight, I cannot see a moment where Machida made a mistake. To be honest, Evans did not really make many either. Machida tooks Evans smallest mistakes and made them look enormous.
Machida will look to defend his belt against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, a true test to see if he is in fact unbeatable.
For now, "The Dragon" reigns supreme, taking over the rank of UFC light heavyweight champion.
