Bleeding Red, White, and Buffalo Blue

Michael McMastersMay 12, 2009

I’ll never forget my first experience as a fan of the Buffalo Bills.  I was about six years old and I always watched the games, when they were on, but I never understood the meaning of to live and die in Buffalo.

One day my Mom decides she is going to take me to the stadium.  I was so psyched. At the time, we were living on Sheldon Road so we could literally walk there.  And walk there we did.

To my surprise, we were given a tour of the stadium.  It was really neat to explore the majestic, then called Rich Stadium.  We got a tour of the press boxes, the meeting rooms, and my favorite, the locker room.

Upon entering the locker room, the single most amazing event in my short life happened.  I met Bruce Smith.  To me he was the biggest man I have ever seen in my life and it was really cool to see this Hall of Fame player and get to ask him questions.

What was unique about talking to Bruce Smith. that I have come to realize over the years, was that he first donned the red, white, and Buffalo blue the year I was born.

We eventually got to walk on the field and it was the craziest moment in my life.  I ran sideline to sideline and stood on the Bills logo.  At the time, it was the 90's Bills helmet.

Memories are great, which is why I bleed now.  The Bills have really suffered from those early 90's days.  Not since Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, Bruce Smith, Cornelius Bennett, and Steve Tasker have we experienced any glory days.

The Bills have struggled mightily this past decade and I can’t remember a time I cried harder than the Music City Miracle game.

When I talk to the fans, I realize that you have to have the thick skin, or one tough heart.  The fan-base is incredible considering we haven’t been to a play-off game in nine years. It is a well known fact that our fans ride or die with the Bills.

I remember when Willis McGahee bashed the town and said the Bills should move to Toronto, Canada.  Well, I remember the town’s reaction to that. It was all over the billboards across town.  I think it said something like “Willis McGahee knows how to hit the hole, got kids?”

I love the Buffalo Bills and I will proudly bleed red, white, and Buffalo blue until the day I die.  Don’t stop Billieving!
