Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Gunners' Improved Luis Suarez Bid Reeks of Desperation
After finishing fourth in the EPL last season, Arsenal are fully aware that they need to make a big move in order to ascend to the all-important top three.
The Gunners' main target during the transfer window has been Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, but Arsenal's last-ditch effort to acquire him now reeks of desperation.
According to David Woods and Adrian Kajumba of the Daily Star, Arsenal are prepared to break the English transfer record with a £51 million bid after their £40 million offer was turned down by the Reds recently.

While Suarez would unquestionably help Arsenal on the pitch by virtue of his goal-scoring prowess, it is very debatable whether or not he is worth what the Gunners are ready to offer. The main concern regarding Suarez is his attitude, as he has gotten himself into trouble on the pitch by making poor decisions.
Suarez has served a handful of suspensions over the course of his career. Two of them stemmed from biting an opponent, and the other came after he allegedly made a racist remark to Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. Investing that much money into an immature player would be a major risk on Arsenal's part.
At this point, Arsenal clearly realizes that many of their closest competitors in the EPL are getting better, so they need to do something in order to keep pace. Suarez is the biggest fish that could potentially be reeled in, and the Gunners are pulling out all the stops. Even so, seems as though they may miss out on their intended target.
According to SuperSport Blitz, Liverpool owner John Henry has no plans to sell Suarez, and he is especially against sending him to a close rival such as Arsenal:
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is on the same page with Henry as well. According to BBC Sport, he believes that Suarez will eventually accept the fact that he will not be granted that transfer that he has been pushing for:
It seems like pretty much anything can happen during transfer season, but Liverpool are dead set against moving Suarez right now. It seems strange to take a Suarez transfer off the table from their perspective since he clearly doesn't want to be at Anfield any longer, but that is the decision that the Reds have made, and they seem intent on sticking with it.
With that in mind, Arsenal would be better off moving on and exploring other options rather than continuing to move toward a dead end. If the Gunners focus all of their attention on Suarez and come up empty, they will be in danger of falling outside the top four in the EPL, provided a team like Tottenham, Everton or even Liverpool improves.
Arsenal can't be blamed for pursuing Suarez in the first place as he scored 30 goals last season and would immediately strengthen the Gunners' attack, but Arsenal simply isn't being realistic. Going after Suarez was a long shot in the first place since teams are usually reluctant to help their rivals, but now that Arsenal is fully aware of Liverpool's intentions, the hunt should be over.
Unless Arsenal increases its bid to an insane amount, Liverpool seems unwilling to make a move. While £51 million is already pushing it, the Gunners would be crazy to improve their offer even more.
Arsenal is certainly coming off as a desperate team right now, and their supporters aren't going to be happy if and when they enter the season without a big reinforcement.
Suarez may become an Arsenal member at some point down the road, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen this year. The Gunners need to come to that realization soon or else they risk entering the season on a very sour note.
