Arsenal has not been shy about throwing its name into the bidding for several top stars on the market. With every transfer window though, there's always bound to be a few names that leave as well. With the Gunners firmly planted in this transfer window's spotlight, here is the very latest on the team.
Arsene Wenger Comments on Realistic Signings
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger held a press conference recently and commented on a few big names currently tied to his club. He told reporters (via The Independent) that Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain are reasonable possibilities, saying:
They are all realistic targets quality-wise, [but] not all of them are available to join us...For years we were out of the race for the top-level transfers but we are coming back now because we are in a better financial situation and also because of Financial Fair Play.
While he made it clear that not all three can become Gunners before next season, Wenger is saying that none are out of Arsenal's reach. The Gunners have already made a bid for Suarez to Liverpool that was rejected.
With Wenger's public statements regarding all three notable names, it's clear the club has confidence that it has a real shot at landing them.
Gervinho Could be Roma Bound
Which player is Arsenal most likely to land?
According to Sky Sport Italia (via Yahoo! Sports), Roma has increased its bid for Arsenal's Gervinho.
The Italian club has offered the Gunners approximately €7 million euros for the Ivory Coast striker. Arsenal has set the asking price for his services at €8 million.
While Arsenal hasn't made decision on the offer just yet, Gervinho hasn't been mum on the thought of leaving.
Back when Ligue 1 club Marsille was said to be interested in him, Gervinho told Le Patriote (via Goal.com) "If I really want to leave Arsenal, I'm sure there would be a lot of interest."
Roma's interest in Gervinho is apparent, and John Cross of The Daily Mirror expects the striker will leave Arsenal one way or the other. The former Lille player is currently sitting out the Gunners' two-week tour of Asia due to an illness.
Arsenal Seriously Gunning for Wayne Rooney
With Wenger publicly mentioning him by name, and the teams making a €20 million bid, its obvious Arsenal is seriously interested in Rooney.
If it happens, it would be amazing. He is the type of player who can win you trophies - and just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that.
David Woods of The Daily Star is also reporting that Theo Walcott and Carl Jenkinson have talked with Rooney about joining their team.
