Fantasy Baseball Free Agent Pool: Strikeout Kings

Ryan LesterMay 7, 2009

Some reasonably available players to assist you in the Strikeouts category.  Realize that some of these will come with high ERAs & WHIPs because if a Pitcher has low numbers in those categories and a good K total, they’re already spoken for.

Mitchell Boggs, St. Louis Cardinals- Mitchell was  guy who helped in the K category with 13 last week, but he did not pick up a Win and his ERA (5.23) and WHIP (1.74) were bloated.  His K/9 Ratio was 11.3, which is nice, but his K/BB was just 1.86.

On the season he’s 1-0 with 19 Ks in 18 Innings with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.  If you can handle the WHIP he could be a decent short-term strikeout helper.  He’s owned in 21 percent of Yahoo, 3.7 percent of ESPN, and 22 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Manny Parra, Milwaukee Brewers- Manny has sparkled in his last two outings going 1-0 with 13 Ks, a 2.25 ERA, and a 1.58 WHIP.  His K/9 ratio was 9.75 and his K/BB ratio was 1.63.  On the year he’s 1-4 with 28 Ks, a 4.88 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP.  He’s owned in 33 percent of Yahoo, 21.5 percent of ESPN, and 52 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Dallas Braden, Oakland A’s- Braden is a guy that should be on more rosters. Currently he’s on just 40 percent of Yahoo, 73 percent of ESPN, and 39 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.  Last week he 1-1 with 12 Ks, a 2.45 ERA, and 1.64 WHIP.  His K/9 ratio was 9.82 and his K/BB ratio was 2.4.  On the year he’s 3-3 with 24 Ks, a 2.50 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.

Ubaldo Jiménez, Colorado Rockies- Ubaldo kicked it into high gear last week going 1-1 with 11 Ks, a 2.57 ERA, and a 0.93 WHIP.  His K/9 ratio was 7.07 and his K/BB ratio was 3.67.  On the year he’s 2-4 with 30 Ks, a 5.45 ERA, and 1.61 WHIP.  He’s owned in 51 percent of Yahoo, 25.8 percent of ESPN, and 76 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Jeff Weaver, Los Angeles Dodgers - Jeff has pitched great since getting called up.  He’s 1-0 with 10 Ks, a 1.00 ERA, and a 1.22 WHIP.  He K/9 ratio is 10.0 and his K/BB ratio is 5.0.  He’s owned in five percent of Yahoo, 1.4 percent of ESPN, and seven percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Kiko Calero, Florida Marlins - Kiko was brilliant in four relief appearances this past week.  Unfortunately he did not pick up any Wins, Saves, or Holds, but he did not allow a Run in 4-2/3 Innings.  He struck out nine batters giving him a K/9 ratio of 17.36.  He walked just one batter.

On the year he’s 1-0 with 19 Ks in 14 Innings, five Holds, a 1.93 ERA, and 0.86 WHIP.  He’s owned in 30 percent of Yahoo, 2.4 percent of ESPN, and seven percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.
