Arsenal Transfer News: Landing Brazil's Julio Cesar Would Be Huge for Gunners

Ryan RudnanskyJul 2, 2013

Arsenal is reportedly willing to pay €1 million for Brazil and Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Julio Cesar, according to Goal.com.

With the club looking to spend this summer making a push for the Premier League title, it's the right move to go after the 33-year-old veteran.

Cesar showed what he could do in the 2013 Confederations Cup. En route to Brazil's title, he made 14 saves in five matches, allowing just three goals in the process. He was the top goalkeeper in the competition, according to the Castrol Index.

While Wojciech Szczesny certainly wasn't a poor goalkeeper last season, he's still young at 20 years of age and prone to making mistakes out on the pitch. It would benefit the Gunners to start a veteran for now while Szczesny develops.

After the Confederations Cup, Cesar hinted that he would like to stay in London, per Football365.com. And why wouldn't he? He's a top goalkeeper in one of the best leagues in the world. In fact, anything less than the Premier League would be a step backward for the veteran as he ages.

Arsene Wenger and Co. have not made it a secret that they are looking to do big things moving forward. After a strong finish to land in the top four last season in the EPL, the club is seeking its first league title since the 2003-04 campaign. Cesar would give the club more of a presence on the back end.

With Arsenal reportedly closing in on 25-year-old Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, per the Express, adding Cesar would send a message to the rest of the EPL. In fact, it would send more than a message—it would make Arsenal a legitimately dangerous club.

The time for waiting is over. The Gunners must seal the deal and begin instilling fear into the hearts of the top clubs in the Premier League once again. Fans don't care about steady progress anymore. They want a trophy.
