Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Gunners Now Favorites to Sign Rooney

Simon EdmondsJun 8, 2018

Jack Wilson of The Daily Star is reporting that Arsenal are now the shock favorites to win the battle to sign Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.

The Liverpudlian has been more than public about his current unhappiness at Old Trafford and will allegedly be looking for a move away from the club this summer.

This isn't the first time that Rooney has created ripples at United with talk of a potential move away from the club. I'm sure many fans will remember the falling out that he and Sir Alex Ferguson experienced a few seasons back.

That time Fergie was able to coax the England striker into staying, but with his retirement and the set of new changes that are likely to come in under David Moyes' reign, things might not pan out so well for United again.

However, one side's loss is another's gain, and amazingly it seems now like the side gaining will be Arsenal.

With the Gunners' attempted signing of Fiorentina striker Steven Jovetic falling flat, Arsene Wenger is now left with a cash fund of roughly £70 million.

Unfortunately for Arsenal it isn't all brilliant news. It is unlikely that if the Gunners do find the money to bring "Wazza" to the Emirates, they will have enough left to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.

It is possible that both players could arrive, but it would be incredibly tight in regards to funds.

If Arsenal do pull of what will be one of the most shocking transfers of the century so far, then this writer would wager that the eight-year trophy drought will finally come to an end for the Londoners.

Rooney is a proven match- and even cup-winner. His goals and performances have been utterly crucial in most of Manchester United's countless titles during this time at the club, and if he can bring just half of that form and skill to Arsenal, then the Gunner's have a genuine shot at the Premier League crown this season.
